Description
Dr. Root, whose real name is Leroy, is a character who first appears in the original season of Duel Masters. He is introduced as the boss of the young duelist George Kamamoto. A mad scientist and a deceptively capable physician, he combines eccentric genius with extraordinary skill as a duelist. His appearance is distinctive, marked by a cross-shaped hairstyle and thick, bottle-bottom glasses, with a purple patch covering part of his head.
As a personality, Dr. Root is an eccentric and whimsical figure, often seen idly using an ear pick and engaging in bizarre methods that seem absurd on the surface. He is a prolific inventor, having designed a human-resembling robot named Mr. Perfect as well as a giant, pilot-able robot. Despite his odd demeanor, he is profoundly serious when it comes to matters of life and death. His unorthodox lessons and robotic creations, such as the robot duplicates he made in Duel Masters Charge to train Shobu and his friends, always conceal a hidden purpose: to make those around him stronger duelists.
Dr. Root's primary motivation stems from a traumatic past event. Before the series began, a duelist named Gardo massacred the participants of a world tournament. This act left Zakira as the most powerful duelist on Earth, and Dr. Root dedicated himself to training a new generation of duelists strong enough to defeat him. His actions are consistently driven by the belief in preserving hope and nurturing future champions. To this end, he took on George as his first disciple and later added Shobu Kirifuda, Mimi Tasogare, and Kokujo Shiro (White) as his students, subjecting them to rigorous and often strange training regimens.
In the story, Dr. Root serves as a mentor, healer, and a powerful ally. He possesses the unique ability to cure people from the physical wounds inflicted by creature attacks during duels, a skill he demonstrates after a traumatic early duel with Shobu where he directly attacks him, seemingly killing him, only to immediately perform surgery to save his life. This shocking act was a brutal lesson intended to cure Shobu of his cowardice. Later, when Kokujo is left in a near-death state by a duelist named Ushijiro, Dr. Root again prioritizes healing above all else, while also relaying a harsh message born of his own grim resolve. His reputation is such that even the primary antagonist Zakira warns that Root is a "difficult opponent."
Key relationships define his role. His bond with his first disciple George is strong, and he is often seen punishing George's antics with bizarre inventions. He is also a close associate of the previous Duel Masters, having been the physician for Yaesaru. He later works with Jed, another ally, to rescue captured Duel Masters. In Duel Masters Versus, he is sought out for his medical genius to cure Lucifer from a deadly poison.
Throughout the series, Dr. Root undergoes development from a mysterious and almost antagonistic teacher to a more direct and supportive mentor. In the Duel Masters: Fighting Edge storyline, he takes direct action against Zakira's forces. Exploiting Zakira's vulnerability while recovering in a tub, he rescues captured duelists, prompting the villain to send his subordinate Vavelle to eliminate him. In his duel against Vavelle, Dr. Root breaks a personal vow not to duel seriously and uses the powerful God cards Geki and Metsu. The resulting light from this summoning not only secures his victory but also plays a crucial role in breaking the brainwashing on White, allowing him to return to being Kokujo.
As a duelist, Dr. Root is exceptionally skilled, possessing a 100% win rate in the original manga continuity. He primarily uses decks that combine the Water and Darkness civilizations, a strategy similar to his disciple George's. In his most notable duel against Vavelle, he uses a deck centered on the God cards Geki and Metsu, cleverly aiming for a library-out victory to avoid causing further death. His notable abilities extend beyond dueling to his skills as a physician and roboticist, making him a multifaceted figure whose inventions and medical expertise are as crucial to the heroes' success as his dueling power.
