Kan Tanaka

Kan Tanaka is a Japanese voice actor and stage actor affiliated with the agency 81 Produce. He was born on February 3, 1964, in Tokyo. He attended Senshu University but left before graduating to pursue a career in acting.

Tanaka began his entertainment career in 1986, initially appearing in television dramas such as Tokusou Saizensen. His transition to voice acting began in the 1990s, and he officially entered the anime industry in 1998. One of his earliest anime roles was providing the voice for Dr. Shu in the 1998 series Hatsumei Boy Kanipan, also known as Inventor Boy Kanipan. He also voiced the character Guardian in the same series.

Throughout his career, Tanaka has built an extensive list of credits, often playing supporting, authoritative, or mentor-type characters. He is known for his role as Dr. Root in the long-running Duel Masters franchise. Other notable anime roles include Brian in Madlax, Tap Topt in D.Gray-man, the "Guide of the Echo" Kuzeykot in Shakugan no Shana II, Hans Georg Hermann in Starship Operators, and Iwai Hajime in Plastic Memories. He has also been a recurring presence in the Super Robot Wars series of video games, voicing characters like Sean Webly. In the Earth Defense Force video game series, he voices the character Honbu.

In the 2010s and 2020s, his career continued with roles such as Iwamikun in Naruto, Yamada in the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha franchise, the Fourth Generation Fat Controller in the Japanese dub of Thomas & Friends from 2014 to 2022, and Gyūyama in The Irregular at Magic High School. More recent roles include Tonoi in Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE in 2019 and Mitsuzō Moriyama in Shinobi no Ittoki in 2022.

Beyond anime, Tanaka is also active in dubbing foreign films and television series, as well as in stage productions. He was a frequent collaborator in stage plays produced by fellow voice actor Hirotaka Suzuoki. He is known for his deep and commanding voice and has demonstrated an ability to take over established roles from other actors, such as succeeding Rokuro Naya as the voice of the Fat Controller. Outside of his professional work, Tanaka holds a third-degree black belt in the martial art of iaido (Muso Shinden-ryu).
