Movie
Description
Kirin is a character from the anime film Ranma ½: Big Trouble in Nekonron, China. He serves as the primary antagonist of the movie, although his motivations are rooted in prophecy rather than malice. His full title is Prince Kirin, and he is the young ruler of Nekonron, a fictional region in China, as well as the leader of a group of warriors known as the Seven Lucky Gods Martial Artists.
In terms of background, Kirin's life has been largely defined by his secluded upbringing and his predetermined role. He was raised from birth to lead the Seven Lucky Gods, a position that isolated him from many common experiences, such as tasting home-cooked food. His primary motivation stems from an ancient prophecy concerning the Scroll of Luck, of which he holds one half. The prophecy dictates that he must marry the woman who possesses the other half, as the joining of the two scrolls will bring happiness. Believing this to be his destiny, he travels to Japan to find his fated bride.
Kirin's personality is a mixture of royal formality, stubbornness, and a surprising degree of kind-heartedness. He is deeply committed to following the traditions and prophecies of his people, which leads him to take drastic actions like kidnapping Akane Tendo, whom he mistakenly identifies as the scroll holder. He speaks in the third person, a traditional verbal tic meant to emphasize his high status and importance. While he appears haughty and determined, he also shows himself to be well-meaning and honorable. He is not cruel, and his respect for his opponent Ranma Saotome grows over the course of their conflict. Kirin is also notably naive due to his sheltered life, a fact highlighted when he is shocked by the variety of flavors in normal food, as his unique metabolism restricts him to a diet of only rice and pickled vegetables.
Within the story, Kirin's central role is that of a rival suitor who disrupts the status quo. Upon arriving at the Tendo Dojo, he quickly identifies Akane as the holder of the Scroll of Luck and abducts her, intending to take her back to Nekonron to be his bride. This act forces Ranma and the rest of the cast to give chase, forming the main plot of the film. Kirin demonstrates his martial arts prowess by easily defeating Ranma in their first encounter, establishing himself as a serious threat. His role is not simply that of a villain, however, as the prophecy is eventually revealed to have a different intended bride, leading to a resolution that does not involve a true villain's defeat.
His key relationships drive the film's conflict and resolution. His primary adversary is Ranma Saotome, who is determined to rescue Akane, his own fiancée. Kirin sees Ranma as a fierce rival, but after their battles are resolved, he shows no lingering hostility and is amicable enough to later send Ranma a photograph from his wedding. His relationship with Akane Tendo is complex; she is initially furious at being kidnapped and attacks him. However, she eventually develops a soft spot for him as he proves to be stubborn but not evil, and his naivety becomes more apparent. The most significant relationship for Kirin, though it develops late in the story, is with Lychee, a young woman from Nekonron who is the true and rightful owner of the other half of the Scroll of Luck. Lychee adores him immediately, and once the misunderstanding about Akane is cleared up, Kirin comes to share a close bond with her, ultimately marrying her.
Kirin does not undergo a dramatic personality shift, but his understanding of his situation certainly develops. He starts the film inflexible, determined to follow the prophecy to the letter by marrying the girl holding the scroll, even after Lychee reveals the mistake. He stubbornly declares that he loves Akane, and that is that. Over time, however, he accepts the truth of the situation, and his final decision to marry Lychee suggests an evolution from a man following a script to one making his own choice.
Kirin is a formidable martial artist with unique and specialized abilities. His fighting style is notable for its peculiar restriction: he must hold a bowl of rice in one hand at all times during combat. Despite this handicap, his speed, reflexes, and control are exceptional. He excels at ranged combat, where he uses his chi to imbue individual grains of rice and then flicks them, creating a spray of needle-like projectiles. In close quarters, he is an expert in defense, wielding a pair of long, formal chopsticks. He uses these chopsticks to snare an opponent's limb or weapon in a vice-like grip, releasing them only when they try to pull away. This technique is so fast and precise that Ranma initially mistakes it for a kind of invisible force field.
