Description
Happosai is the founder and grandmaster of the Anything Goes School of Martial Arts, a diminutive old man whose appearance belies his status as one of the most powerful and troublesome figures in his world. Despite his tiny, wrinkled frame and comical demeanor, he is an ancient and immensely skilled martial artist whose age is estimated to be well over a century, with some accounts suggesting he is several hundred years old.

His background reveals a long history of mischief and thievery. In his youth, he was a lecherous and unpopular troublemaker who traveled to a Chinese Amazon village. There, he made persistent and unwelcome advances on a young woman named Cologne. After being repeatedly rejected, he took revenge by stealing many of the village's valuables, including a magical bracelet belonging to Cologne herself. Many years later, he took on Genma Saotome and Soun Tendo as his students. However, the "training" he subjected them to was a life of servitude, forcing them to clean up his messes and take the blame for his many crimes. Eventually, the two men trapped their master in a cave, sealed it with spirit wards, and left him for dead, finally believing themselves free. After a long imprisonment, Happosai escaped and made his way to the Tendo Dojo. Though Genma and Soun feared his revenge, he instead forced his way into their lives, moving into the dojo and becoming a permanent, parasitic resident.

Happosai's personality is defined by a triad of traits: a profound perversion, a love of martial arts, and a desire to be a nuisance. He is the quintessential dirty old man, utterly addicted to his lecherous habits. His primary obsession is stealing women's undergarments, which he hoards in a large sack, often shouting his signature catchphrase, "What a haul!" as he flees from his pursuers. He also frequently attempts to grope women and peek on them in bathhouses. This addiction is so strong that being deprived of contact with women or their lingerie causes him to go into severe withdrawal, becoming deathly weak. Despite this, he adheres to a strange, self-serving code of chivalry, claiming he will never fight a woman, and he rarely retaliates against the beatings he receives from his female victims. Beyond his perversion, he is vain and dishonest, often reimagining his past to portray himself as a handsome, heroic ladykiller. He is also petty, sadistic, and vengeful, particularly towards Ranma, Genma, and Soun, whom he torments with elaborate schemes ranging from incriminating them for his own thefts to permanently crippling Ranma's strength with a forbidden moxibustion technique. On extremely rare occasions, he shows a benevolent side, such as helping a woman give birth or showing kindness to small children.

His key relationships are often antagonistic. He has a fierce rivalry with Ranma Saotome, who despises him; Ranma sees Happosai as his personal archenemy. Genma and Soun live in fear of their old master, forced to tolerate his presence. His relationship with the elderly Amazon warrior Cologne is complex; in their youth, she may have had some feelings for him, but his lecherous nature ultimately led to their enmity. She is one of the few who can challenge him, though he has proven to be her superior in a contest. He is also the godfather of the monster Pantyhose Taro, having accidentally cursed him as an infant and given him his humiliating name. In the film Big Trouble in Nekonron, China, Happosai's past misdeeds in the kingdom of Nekonron come back to haunt him, directly involving him in the central conflict when Akane Tendo is kidnapped.

In combat, Happosai is an unparalleled genius. As the grandmaster of Anything Goes Martial Arts, he is easily one of the most formidable fighters in the series, possessing speed, power, and knowledge far beyond most other characters. He has effortlessly defeated martial artists like Ranma, Ryoga, Genma, and Soun simultaneously. His knowledge is vast, encompassing ancient martial arts techniques, forgotten pressure points, alchemical recipes, and the secrets of many magical artifacts. His signature technique is the Happo Fire Burst, a powerful, ki-infused firework that can cause massive damage. He is also a master of manipulating his battle aura, which he can use to paralyze opponents with fear or even form a giant, intangible version of himself. Other notable abilities include the Ultimate Weakness Moxibustion, which saps a victim's strength, and a vanishing technique that allows him to become invisible. Despite his incredible power, his reckless perversion and childish nature often provide a means for his enemies to outsmart him.
