Description
The Conductor of the Galaxy Express 999 is the train's primary crew member and a constant presence throughout the journey. His true name, as well as the specific details of his origin, are never revealed, adding to his enigmatic nature. He is not human but a mysterious alien life form. Physically, his body is composed of high-pressure gas, making him naturally invisible. To maintain a physical form and protect his light-sensitive eyes, he must wear his Galactic Railway uniform at all times, which he does without fail, leaving his face perpetually shadowed except for two distinct, glowing yellow eyes.

Personality-wise, the Conductor is defined by his serious, strict, and deeply principled nature. He is a stickler for the rules and frequently cites the Galaxy Express rule book, believing in adhering to regulations and the timetable above all else. This often puts him in a position of conflict with passengers like Tetsuro Hoshino, whose compassionate actions might bend or break the rules. Despite this rigid exterior, he possesses a somewhat timid and anxious disposition, especially when faced with situations outside of standard procedures. However, this timidity belies a surprisingly broad-minded and sincere character. When the safety of his passengers is truly threatened, his demeanor shifts dramatically to one of fierce protectiveness, willing to openly defy the Galactic Railway Management Bureau or the train's own computer to ensure their well-being.

The Conductor's primary motivation is to perform his duties flawlessly and maintain the integrity of the Galaxy Express 999's schedule. To him, the rules are not just guidelines but the very framework that ensures the safe and proper operation of the railway. Beneath this professional dedication lies a deep-seated personal history. He hails from a planet called the Face of Memories, where he once had a first love named Mavil Russ. He began working on the 999 to earn a future with her, but their relationship ended when she changed her mind. This lost love left a lasting mark, and he is known to address female passengers as "Female" in her memory.

In his role aboard the 999, the Conductor serves as the primary liaison between the passengers and the Galactic Railway. His responsibilities include making departure announcements, checking tickets, and providing guidance. While the train is largely automated and controlled by a stubborn locomotive computer, the Conductor's role is essential for passenger services. He often acts as a helpful, if limited, ally to Tetsuro and Maetel. Although his official authority is minimal compared to the central computer and the Railway Management Bureau, he frequently uses whatever small leverage he has, such as slightly delaying a departure, to aid the protagonists. His key relationships are with the two main passengers. His dynamic with Tetsuro Hoshino evolves the most, starting as a formal, rule-bound interaction and gradually growing into a mutual respect where he bends regulations and even risks his position to save the boy, eventually calling him by name. His relationship with Maetel is one of professional trust and mutual respect, as he is aware she has a hidden mission but chooses not to interfere.

Throughout the series, the Conductor shows notable development, moving from a being who is almost entirely defined by his adherence to the rulebook to one who more readily acts on his personal convictions and compassion. He learns to prioritize the spirit of the law over the letter, especially when the lives of those he has come to care for are in jeopardy. As revealed in the spin-off Galactic Railroad Stories: Planet of Forgotten Time, his past also includes secretly raising an adopted son, Kyrian, breaking the very rules he holds so dear, which adds another layer to his complex character. While not a fighter by trade, the Conductor has demonstrated notable abilities. He possesses excellent marksmanship with a pistol and has shown surprising physical strength and speed when subduing threatening individuals, taking down an armed passenger in an instant. Ultimately, his most significant ability is his unwavering dedication and his hidden, yet profound, capacity for empathy and courage.
