Description
Android 13 is a fictional character and the primary antagonist of the Dragon Ball Z film, Super Android 13!. He is an artificial human, or Android, created by the villainous Dr. Gero. However, unlike many of Gero's other creations, Android 13 was not activated by the doctor himself. Following Dr. Gero's death at the hands of his own Androids 17 and 18, a supercomputer containing Gero's consciousness and vengeful programming continued its work. This computer completed the development of Android 13, as well as his companion models, Androids 14 and 15, with the sole directive of carrying out Gero's vendetta against the Saiyan warrior, Goku.
Android 13's core personality is defined by his singular, unwavering mission to terminate Goku. He exists for no other purpose and shows little emotion beyond a diabolical confidence in his ability to complete his objective. In the original Japanese version of the film, he is portrayed as a serious and relentless fighter, singularly focused on his programming. The English dub, however, gives him a markedly different personality, modeling him after a stereotypical American "redneck" or cowboy. In this version, he speaks with a thick Southern accent, refers to Goku as "city boy," and shouts exclamations like "Yeehaw!" during battle. Despite these differences in presentation, the core of his character remains the same: he is a ruthless and powerful machine who will destroy anyone who interferes with his primary goal of killing Goku.
Android 13 serves as the main threat in the film, acting as the leader of the three androids activated by Dr. Gero's computer. His role in the story is to confront Goku and the other Z-Fighters in a snowy, northern region. He initially fights Goku to a standstill, demonstrating power comparable to a Super Saiyan. His role becomes critical after his comrades, Android 14 and Android 15, are destroyed by Vegeta and Future Trunks. Android 13 then reveals a hidden function, absorbing the internal components and energy reactors of the defeated androids into his own body. This transformation turns him into Super Android 13, a much larger, more powerful, and more bestial form with blue skin and spiky orange hair.
His key relationship is with his creator, or rather the computer that birthed him, as it directly feeds him information and commands during the battle. He also has a functional relationship with Androids 14 and 15, whom he treats as subordinates or resources to be used for his own evolution. He has no meaningful relationships with the heroes, viewing them only as obstacles. In his transformed state, his personality becomes more frenzied and maniacal; he speaks very little, often reduced to growls and roars, and fights with extreme brutality, showing no hesitation in crushing or blasting his opponents.
Android 13 possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable foe. Like other androids from his line, he is a permanent energy type, meaning his power does not deplete from fighting. One of his primary skills is Data Input, a technique that allows him to scan an opponent and upload all of their combat data, enabling him to predict and dodge their attacks with ease. His signature attack is the S.S. Deadly Bomber, a powerful, spiraling, red homing energy sphere said to be capable of destroying half a planet in a single blast. His most defining ability is his absorption technique, which allows him to merge with the parts of Androids 14 and 15 to achieve his enhanced Super Android 13 form. In this state, his physical strength, speed, and durability increase dramatically, allowing him to easily overpower Vegeta, Trunks, and Piccolo simultaneously. He is ultimately defeated when Goku absorbs the energy of a Spirit Bomb while in his Super Saiyan form, delivering a single, decisive punch that disintegrates the android.
