Description
Cyborg #13, also known as Android 13 or Artificial Human No. 13, is a fictional character created by the evil scientist Dr. Gero. Following Dr. Gero's death at the hands of his own creations, Android 17 and Android 18, a supercomputer containing Gero's consciousness and thirst for revenge continued his work. This computer completed the construction of Android 13, along with androids 14 and 15, with their sole programming directive being to kill the Saiyan warrior Son Goku.
Android 13 is depicted as a tall figure with red hair, a blue outfit, and a mechanical cranial unit that resembles a trucker's cap, giving him a distinct Southern American appearance in his design. In the original Japanese version of the film, Android 13 is the most talkative of the three androids, displaying a serious and focused demeanor regarding his mission. However, localized versions, particularly the English dub, characterize him with a stereotypical "redneck" personality, using colloquial speech and referring to Goku with nicknames like "city boy". Regardless of interpretation, his core personality is defined by a ruthless, unsympathetic, and single-minded dedication to his objective. He shows no mercy and is willing to destroy anyone who interferes with his goal of killing Goku, though he initially claims that only Goku is their target.
The character's primary role is as the central antagonist in the film Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13! In the story, Android 13 is activated after his companions, Android 14 and Android 15, have already engaged Goku and the other Z-Fighters. He arrives at the battlefield and immediately confronts Goku, engaging him in a fierce battle. He maintains a relationship of utility with Androids 14 and 15; they are his brethren and partners in the mission created by Dr. Gero's computer.
A key turning point for the character occurs after Vegeta and Trunks destroy Android 14 and Android 15. Android 13 then reveals a special absorption ability similar to that of the villain Cell. He absorbs the computer chips, battle data, and energy reactors from the remains of his fallen comrades, triggering a dramatic transformation into Super Android 13. In this hulking, more powerful form, his skin turns blue and grey, his hair becomes spiky and orange, and his muscle mass greatly increases. His power skyrockets to the point where he effortlessly overpowers Super Saiyan Vegeta, Super Saiyan Trunks, and Piccolo simultaneously. He becomes virtually unstoppable, even shattering Trunks's sword on his arm.
In terms of notable abilities, Android 13, like other androids of his type, is equipped with an Eternal Energy Reactor. This gives him an infinite supply of energy, meaning he never tires and his energy cannot be sensed by the Z-Fighters. His signature technique is the S.S. Deadly Bomber, where he generates a large, spiraling red energy sphere that is said to have the power to destroy half a planet and can home in on its target.
Despite his overwhelming power, Android 13 is ultimately defeated. Goku gathers energy for a Spirit Bomb, but, unable to throw it in his normal state, he transforms into a Super Saiyan and absorbs the massive energy into his body. In this enhanced state, Goku delivers a single, devastating punch that pierces through Super Android 13, sending him into the core of the Spirit Bomb where he is obliterated. In the Japanese version, as he is destroyed, the normally talkative Android 13, in his transformed state, utters his final words: "Son Goku". His defeat also causes Dr. Gero's supercomputer to self-destruct.
