Kazuyuki Sogabe
Description
Kazuyuki Sogabe was a Japanese actor, voice actor, and musician born on April 16, 1948, in Chiba Prefecture. A graduate of Keiai University's Faculty of Economics, he left his studies in his fourth year to pursue a career in entertainment, entering a training program at Nippon Television. He later studied under actors Kunihiko Kiyokawa and Gorō Naya and joined the theatre company Theatre Echo, before affiliating with Aoni Production later in his career.
Sogabe's voice acting debut came in 1972 with a role in the film Panda! Go, Panda! His first leading role in an anime series was in 1974 as the hero Takeshi Yoroi in Hurricane Polymar. This marked the beginning of a prolific career spanning nearly three decades, during which he became known for his distinctive low and elegant voice, often cast in handsome leading man roles or charismatic villains.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Sogabe built an extensive filmography in anime, becoming a familiar presence in the mecha and adventure genres. His many roles from this period include Ippei Mine in Voltes V, Kyoshiro Yuzuki in Fighting General Daimos, and J. Rock in Fang of the Sun Dougram. He also took on leading roles in the J9 series, playing Isaac Godunov in Galaxy Cyclone Braiger and I.C. Blues in Galactic Whirlwind Sasuraiger. His versatility extended to a wide range of other characters, such as Bancoran in Patalliro!, Akira Yamamoto in Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, and Tonio in 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother. He also appeared in tokusatsu productions, providing guest voices for series like Kamen Rider Amazon.
In the 1990s, Sogabe continued to secure prominent roles in major franchises. He was the voice of Kunzite in the original Sailor Moon anime and took on the dual role of the villainous and heroic Gemini Saga, as well as his brother Kanon, in Saint Seiya. He also voiced characters in the Dragon Ball Z series, including the villain Artificial Human No. 13 in the film Super Android 13! and the South Kaiōshin. Other notable performances include Yaminorius III in Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger, Ben Beckman in One Piece, and the iconic villain Psycho Mantis in the video game Metal Gear Solid.
Beyond acting, Sogabe was an accomplished musician and guitarist. In 1977, he formed the voice actor band Slapstick with fellow actors Tōru Furuya and Toshio Furukawa, for which he served as the lead guitarist and songwriter. He was also a member of a theatrical music unit called Four in One and worked as a stage director.
In December 2000, Sogabe retired from voice acting, citing a perceived weakness in his voice. His ongoing roles were subsequently taken over by other actors, such as Tetsu Inada and Ryōtarō Okiayu. He made a brief return in 2004 to record new material as Yaminorius III for a DVD-BOX release of Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger, which became his final performance. Kazuyuki Sogabe passed away on September 17, 2006, from esophageal cancer at the age of 58.
