TV-Series
Description
Wataru Toki is a 15-year-old boy known for his meek, clumsy, and wimpy personality. Easily embarrassed and frequently upstaged, he nonetheless harbors a determination to prove himself, occasionally attempting bold acts to impress others. He typically wears blue overalls and a matching hat with stylized markings, contrasting with the courageous red associated with his girlfriend and his own superhero identity. Noodles, especially cup noodles, and gyudon beef bowls are his frequent meals.
His life shifts dramatically when he and his girlfriend Koyomi discover a time machine in the attic of the apartment building where they assist detective Kingorou Toyama. Princess Karen emerges from the machine, revealing herself as their descendant from the future kingdom of Nandahla. She seeks the Jujaku phoenix to bring peace to her kingdom, threatened by the evil Prince Komaro and his sister Princess Mirenjo. Wataru and Koyomi agree to help her retrieve the artifact across different time periods.
Following a hostile encounter with Mirenjo’s gang—Julie Kokematsu and Alan Sukadon—Princess Karen bestows upon Wataru the ability to awaken his inner courage. This enables him to transform into Yattodetaman, a bold and confident superhero who acts decisively, typically triggered by chanting "courage" three times. Later episodes reveal the process involves Princess Karen summoning a special team from the Nandara Kingdom. They envelop Wataru in a time-stopping ray, place him in a trance with a hammer strike, and conduct rapid training and costume changes within seconds.
As Yattodetaman, he operates without a female partner but collaborates with Koyomi to combine his key with her keepsake lock, summoning the mecha Daikyojin. His signature introduction involves playing a flute and declaring: "Surprise, peach tree, pepper tree! From the ends of time I’ll get you! At last I came through, I’ve finally came through, Earth’s Idol Yattodetaman!" His primary weapons are Rose Shurikens, which often strike opponents' heads or clothing, and the Doremi Sword—a flute-like extending pole that stamps a "Y" on enemies and can slice through objects.
In other media, he appears in Banpresto’s Time Bokan games as an adversary to the Dorombo gang in shoot-em-ups and as a non-playable racer in *Bokan GoGoGo!*, competing against Mirenjo’s gang for magical tulips. He also features in the radio drama *Heisei Time Bokan*, interacting with characters from across the Time Bokan series. While not physically present, his superhero identity is adopted by Arashi member Kazunari Ninomiya in the animated music video for "Believe," where Ninomiya wields the Rose Shurikens and Doremi Sword against antagonists.
