TV-Series
Description
Kazuhiro Karasu is a Catholic priest and exorcist who serves as an experienced mentor figure in the world of ghost sweeping. At the age of 45, he is considered one of the most powerful and skillful exorcists active, having undergone rigorous training. However, his methods, which prioritize effectiveness over strict adherence to doctrine, led to his expulsion from the church. Despite this, his personal faith remains a core part of his identity.
A defining trait of Karasu is his principled refusal to charge common people for his exorcism services, only accepting payment when contracted by companies. This altruistic approach has resulted in a life of constant poverty, often to the point of going without food for days. His financial situation is a stark contrast to the profit-driven philosophy of his most famous former student, Reiko Mikami.
Karasu's role in the story is deeply intertwined with the Mikami family across two generations. In 1978, at the request of Meiko Rokudou, he acted as a temporary mentor to a young Michie Mikami, supervising her final exorcisms. It was during this period that it is suggested he may have developed romantic feelings for the energetic Michie. Years later, Michie sent her daughter, Reiko Mikami, to train under Karasu, and he taught her the Catholic methods of exorcism. Despite his efforts, he was unable to alter Reiko's materialistic values, and she went on to build a highly profitable ghost sweeping business.
Beyond his direct mentorship, Karasu serves as a wise advisor and a common companion to Reiko when facing particularly difficult supernatural enemies. As the story progresses, his function shifts from an active front-line fighter to a strategic advisor, often being the voice of reason who urges the team to act wisely in challenging situations. He is also the mentor to Pietro de Bloodeau, a young vampire who, as a disciple, shares more of his altruistic and modest nature. A glimpse into the future, seen on a professional license, reveals that Karasu is destined to become the Director of the Japanese Ghost Sweeper Community. His deep connection to the Mikami family extends to Reiko's father, Kimihiko Mikami, who is a client and friend; Karasu regularly visits Kimihiko to exorcise the spirits that his uncontrolled telepathic powers attract.
In terms of abilities, Karasu is a world-class exorcist whose power is acknowledged by his peers. His training on Myoushinzan has made him exceptionally skilled, so much so that it is said those who could match his abilities could be counted on one hand. In combat, his expertise allows him to face powerful spirits, though the series shows that even he can fall victim to extraordinarily strong foes, such as when he was frozen by a yuki-onna, a snow maiden. His fighting style incorporates the Catholic rituals of exorcism, which he effectively passed on to his students.
