Description
The Gold Saint of the Gemini Temple, Saga, is one of the most powerful and profoundly complex figures among the warriors serving Athena. His story is defined by a fundamental duality, as he harbors two distinct and opposing souls within a single body. One side is benevolent, noble, and deeply loyal to the goddess, while the other is consumed by ambition, cruelty, and a lust for power. This internal conflict makes him not merely a villain but a tragic figure whose actions are a constant struggle between light and darkness.
Originally, Saga was a saint of kind and fair character, beloved by those around him and considered a prime candidate to succeed the previous Pope, Shion. However, the Pope perceived a growing seed of evil within Saga, a darkness that would eventually split his personality. When Shion instead chose the Sagittarius Gold Saint Aiolos as his successor, Saga's evil side was enraged by this rejection, leading him to murder the Pope and assume his identity, all while hiding his face behind a mask. This act marks the beginning of his role as the primary antagonist of the Sanctuary arc. As the false Pope, he spent years manipulating the Sanctuary from within, ordering the death of the infant Athena and forcing Aiolos to flee in an attempt to save her.
Saga's primary motivation shifts between his two natures. His evil side is driven by a tyrannical desire to dominate the Earth, believing himself to be the only one capable of ruling and protecting humanity, even if through wickedness. He seeks to eliminate Athena and any who stand in his way. Conversely, his good side remains a prisoner within his own body, often watching helplessly as his darker half commits atrocities, and yearns for atonement and a return to his duty as a loyal saint. This internal war is occasionally reflected in physical changes; in the original manga, his hair shifts from blond to jet-black when the evil side takes control, a contrast later adapted in the anime with blue and grey hair.
In his role as the villainous mastermind, Saga is a formidable strategist and manipulator. Beyond usurping the papacy, he sent other Gold and Silver Saints on missions to eliminate his rivals and retrieve the Sagittarius Cloth from the Bronze Saints. His key relationships are often defined by this struggle. His twin brother, Kanon, initially encouraged his dark ambitions, though Saga would eventually imprison him for his evil schemes. In a twist of fate, Kanon later redeems himself by becoming the loyal Gemini Saint in Saga's stead. Saga also holds a deep-seated envy and opposition towards Aiolos, the saint who was chosen as Pope over him and who rescued the infant Athena. In death, he is reunited with fellow fallen Gold Saints, such as Camus, Shura, Deathmask, and Aphrodite, as they are resurrected to serve Hades, only to ultimately betray that servitude to help Athena.
The character's most significant development occurs at the climax of the battle in the Sanctuary. After being defeated by the Bronze Saints, the good Saga finally manages to reassert control over his body. Faced with the goddess Athena, whom he had harmed so grievously, he is overcome with remorse. In an act of profound repentance, he takes his own life, stabbing himself through the heart with Athena's golden staff to atone for his sins. However, his story does not end there. During the subsequent war against Hades, Saga is resurrected as a Specter, one of Hades's warriors. Alongside other fallen Gold Saints, he infiltrates the Sanctuary under the guise of serving the god of the underworld. This is revealed to be a desperate ruse to get close to Athena and present her with the goddess's own sacred Cloth, a final act of loyalty and redemption. The twelve Gold Saints, including Saga, ultimately sacrifice their lives for a final time to destroy the Wailing Wall, paving the way for the Bronze Saints to enter the realm of Elysium and defeat Hades.
As a Gemini Gold Saint, Saga possesses immense power, widely considered to be among the strongest of his generation. His signature techniques are devastating. The Galaxian Explosion is his ultimate attack, concentrating his cosmos to an unfathomable degree and releasing it as a colossal shockwave that is said to possess the power to destroy stars and even an entire galaxy. Another Dimension is a technique that allows him to tear a rift in the fabric of space-time, banishing his opponents into a limitless dimensional void from which escape is nearly impossible. He also wields the Demon Emperor Fist, a powerful psychic attack that allows him to completely control the minds of his victims, turning them into his puppets. His mastery of illusions, such as the Labyrinth of Twins, can trap enemies in an endless maze, and he is capable of using his cosmos to project his senses and even his will across great distances. It is this combination of overwhelming offensive power and esoteric psychic abilities that makes Gemini Saga a nearly invincible foe and a legend among Saints.
