Description
In the film Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming, which takes place seven years after the Cell Games, Kid Trunks is the eight-year-old son of Vegeta and Bulma. As a Saiyan-Earthling hybrid, he has inherited immense natural fighting potential. By this point in his life, he has already been training rigorously under his father Vegeta for several years, a regimen that has enabled him to achieve the legendary Super Saiyan transformation at a remarkably young age.
Trunks possesses a bold, confident, and somewhat mischievous personality. He is outgoing and cocky, often displaying a level of bravado that belies his young age. Having grown up in privilege as the heir to the Capsule Corporation fortune, he is used to getting his way and shows a playful, competitive edge, particularly in his interactions with his best friend, Goten. However, beneath this brash exterior lies a clever and resourceful child. He inherits his mother Bulma's sharp intellect, which he often channels into devising plans and strategies during a crisis. In this film, his motivations are initially simple and childlike, such as accompanying Goten and Videl on a quest to find the Dragon Balls. However, when the legendary Super Saiyan Broly awakens and threatens their lives, Trunks's motivation shifts to survival and the protection of his friends and family. Despite being terrified by Broly's overwhelming power, he does not simply flee; he uses his wits and speed to fight back, even managing to momentarily distract the monstrous villain.
Trunks’s role in the story is that of one of the primary initial combatants against Broly. Alongside Goten, he is forced to fend off the rampaging warrior long enough for backup to arrive. They are largely outmatched, and their fight is characterized by desperate hit-and-run tactics rather than a direct confrontation. His key relationship in the film is with Son Goten, who is not only his closest friend but also his rival and partner in mischief. Their bond is central to the film’s dynamic, as they work together seamlessly, though their immature bickering and comedic antics provide much of the film's lighter tone. While Gohan also plays a crucial protective role, Trunks’s relationship with his own father, Vegeta, is not explored in this particular movie.
In terms of development, Trunks does not undergo a significant emotional arc in this standalone film but rather acts as a catalyst for the plot. His and Goten's discovery of the Dragon Balls inadvertently leads to Broly's release. Throughout the battle, he demonstrates a transition from playful overconfidence to serious, focused determination when faced with a genuine life-or-death threat. He learns the limits of his power, recognizing that his Super Saiyan abilities are insufficient against a foe of Broly’s caliber, which forces him to rely on strategy and teamwork.
Notably, Trunks displays several impressive abilities in this film. Like all trained Z-Fighters, he can fly using his ki and sense the energy of others. He is able to transform into a Super Saiyan, which significantly amplifies his strength, speed, and fighting capability. His combat style includes rapid energy blasts, such as the Energy Burst, a Full Power Energy Barrage Wave he uses against Broly. He is also shown to be quick-thinking in battle, using the environment and distraction techniques to survive. At the climax, he plays a pivotal role by firing a blast that breaks Broly’s concentration, allowing Goku, Gohan, and Goten to combine their power in the Family Kamehameha to finally destroy the Legendary Super Saiyan.
