Laura Bailey
Description
Laura Bailey is an American voice actress known for her extensive work in anime dubbing, animation, and video games. Born on May 28, 1981, in Mississippi, she began her voice acting career after being discovered by a fellow voice actor during a college theatre performance in Texas. She attended the theatre program at Collin College in Plano, Texas, which led to her first major role with the anime dubbing company Funimation.
Her entry into professional voice acting came with the Funimation dub of the popular series Dragon Ball Z, where she voiced the character Kid Trunks. This role marked the beginning of a long and prolific career in the industry. In her early years at Funimation, she also voiced starring roles in series such as Marlene Angel in Blue Gender and Keiko Yukimura in Yu Yu Hakusho, which helped establish her presence in the English dubbing community.
Bailey is widely recognized for her portrayal of Tohru Honda in the English adaptation of the beloved anime Fruits Basket. She voiced the character in the initial 2001 series and reprised the role for the 2019 reboot, including its second season, the final season, and the prelude film. She has stated that the role of the optimistic and kind-hearted Tohru was not only a favorite but also personally inspiring. Her work in anime spans a wide range of genres and character types. She voiced the villain Lust in both the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist series and its later adaptation, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Other significant anime roles include the title character Sana Kurata in Kodocha, Henrietta in Gunslinger Girl, Shin Nohara in the Funimation dub of Crayon Shin-Chan, and Emily / Glitter Lucky in Glitter Force. Her filmography also features roles in Naruto Shippūden as Shion, Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations as Xing Huo, Lupin III: Farewell to Nostradamus as Julia, and Ingress as ADA, among many others.
Beyond performing, Bailey has also contributed to anime production in behind-the-scenes roles. She worked as an ADR director and line producer on several projects, including the English adaptation of Gunslinger Girl, where she also voiced the character Henrietta, and Kodocha. Her work often involves recurring collaborations with other voice actors in the industry, notably her husband, Travis Willingham, whom she married in 2011, and actors like Troy Baker.
While her anime roles form a significant part of her career, Bailey is also highly acclaimed for her voice work in video games and western animation. Her video game credits are extensive and include iconic characters such as Chun-Li in the Street Fighter IV series, Jaina Proudmoore in World of Warcraft, Serana in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Dawnguard, and Abigail "Fetch" Walker in Infamous Second Son. In 2020, she won widespread critical acclaim and a British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) for Best Performer in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Abby in the video game The Last of Us Part II. In animation, she has lent her voice to numerous characters in franchises such as Marvel (Black Widow, Spider-Woman) and DC (Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn). She is also a core cast member of the popular web series Critical Role, a live-streamed Dungeons & Dragons campaign, where she plays several characters and has reprised her role in its animated adaptation, The Legend of Vox Machina.
