Description
Oichi is a character in the anime Sengoku Basara: End of Judgement. She is the younger sister of the warlord Oda Nobunaga and the wife of Azai Nagamasa.
Her background is defined by the conflict between her family and her marriage. Her marriage to Nagamasa was arranged by her brother as a political and military strategy, and she was initially expected to act as a spy within the Azai household. Contrary to that expectation, she genuinely fell in love with Nagamasa, which left her caught between loyalty to her brother and love for her husband. She also carries the same dark supernatural power that Nobunaga possesses, and she regards this gift as a personal curse that she constantly blames herself for.
In personality, Oichi is melancholic, introverted, and deeply insecure. She repeatedly attributes the misfortunes around her to herself with the phrase "It's all my fault..." and tends toward pessimism about her own fate. Beneath this fragile surface, however, she has a less obvious quality: she unconsciously uses her beauty to influence those around her, and soldiers and retainers can be swayed or controlled by her presence alone. At times a more unsettling, intense nature surfaces that reflects her connection to her brother's fearsome reputation.
Her motivations are primarily emotional rather than political. Above all, she wishes to remain close to Nagamasa and to stand beside him even in times of war. After the fall of the Oda clan, she is presented as the leader of the Oda remnants, though in reality her retainers use her as a figurehead and exploit her vulnerability. She is manipulated more easily than before, making her leadership largely nominal.
In the story of End of Judgement, Oichi occupies a tragic supporting role tied to the legacy of her brother. Her relationship with Nobunaga is complex: she fears him and carries guilt over their shared blood and powers, yet she is also regarded as one of the few people who can truly understand him. Her bond with Nagamasa is the most important emotional anchor in her life, and it shapes her decisions both on and off the battlefield.
Her development centers on the destructive potential of her own powers. Unable to escape her misfortune, she eventually succumbs to the darkness within her, and in the wider telling of her story this leads her to kill Nobunaga's retainers and ultimately Nobunaga himself at Honnoji. Afterward, she briefly regains her sanity and breaks down in grief over what she has done.
As a fighter, Oichi is a skilled combatant who wields a twin-headed naginata, one version of which is shaped like a straw effigy. Her abilities come from the same dark power as her brother's: she can manipulate darkness, command the dead, drain the life force of enemies, regenerate from harm, and even send opponents to hell. She is also capable of flight. These abilities make her both a fragile figure and a genuinely dangerous opponent when her power takes control.
