Description
The character known publicly as Michel Volban de Cabelle is actually a young woman named Racine Blance, sometimes rendered Racine Blanch. She is the younger sister of the real Michel Volban and serves as the figurehead and leader of the People's Army in the anime Glass Fleet. She carries this false identity for nearly the entire story, and the gap between the name she presents to the world and her true self is central to her character.

Racine was born into the noble Volban de Cabelle family, but her childhood was marked by absence. Her mother died only months after her birth, leaving her with virtually no memory of her, and her father was rarely home. She was raised largely in the shadow of her older brother Michel, who taught her to fight and became the most important figure in her life. She loved fencing and wanted to be like him, which fostered a tomboyish demeanor. When her father observed her sparring and saw that she had surpassed her brother, he ordered her to conduct herself as a proper lady of a royal house. She vowed to do so, but circumstances prevented her from ever fulfilling that promise.

Following her father's death and her brother's disappearance during the war against the Holy Emperor Vetti Lunard Sforza de Roselait, Racine chose to abandon her own identity to save the People's Army from destruction. She took her brother's name, adopted his manner, and had an X-shaped scar carved into her back to match the one her brother had received in a tournament battle against Vetti. She also set aside her birth name completely. Her decision was driven not only by duty but by a deep love for her brother that went beyond ordinary sibling affection, and her performance as Michel was a way of keeping him alive through herself.

As Michel, she is the determined, idealistic leader of the rebellion against the Holy Empire. She is motivated by a desire to honor her brother, protect her followers, and free the galaxy from Vetti's tyranny. Despite her noble background, she presents herself as a soldier of the people and leads by example. Her commitment to the cause is sincere, and she carries the weight of her deception heavily, remaining composed and disciplined even while hiding her true self from her allies.

Her role in the story is that of the leader who seeks out the Glass Battleship and its captain, Cleo Aiolos Corbeille de Veil, in the hope of turning the tide against the empire. She attempts to convince Cleo to lend his strength to the rebellion, and the alliance that forms between them becomes the backbone of the resistance. Her relationship with Cleo begins as a pragmatic and uneasy partnership, evolves through mutual respect and trust, and eventually develops into genuine romantic love. Her true identity is eventually revealed to Cleo's crew, which strains the trust between them and forces her to confront her own feelings of guilt and self-doubt.

Her relationship with her brother remains emotionally central even after his apparent death. A man strongly resembling the real Michel appears as part of an attack force that infiltrates the glass battleship. This man is emotionless, brainwashed, and relentlessly attacks Racine, yet she continues to believe he is her brother and refuses to give up on him. In the climactic confrontation, when Cleo and the man are both in danger of being sucked into the depths of space, she chooses to save Cleo and declares that the man is no brother of hers. It is later shown that the man was indeed her real brother, marked with the X-shaped scar, making her final rejection of him a painful acknowledgment that the person she loved was no longer there.

In terms of abilities, Racine is a highly skilled fencer and combatant, trained by her brother and refined through years of fighting in the rebellion. She is also a capable leader and strategist, able to rally and command the People's Army under extraordinary pressure. Perhaps her most notable personal skill is her ability to sustain a convincing public persona, passing as her brother through posture, dress, and behavior while hiding her identity from nearly everyone around her. Over the course of the series, she grows from a figure defined by sacrifice and imitation into someone capable of choosing her own path, ultimately allowing herself to love Cleo and to accept that she can be more than a replacement for the brother she lost.
