TV-Series
Description
Chi-Chi is introduced as the princess of Fire Mountain and the only daughter of the Ox-King. When first encountered as a young girl, she has a shy and fearful nature, which contrasts sharply with her father's terrifying reputation. Despite this timidity, she demonstrates a pure heart from an early age, as evidenced by her ability to ride the Flying Nimbus, and she possesses surprising martial arts skill, even managing to decapitate a Tyrannosaurus rex in a frightened outburst.
As Chi-Chi matures into an adult, her personality undergoes a significant transformation. She develops a tough, fierce, and tomboyish demeanor that is often marked by angry outbursts. After marrying Goku and becoming a mother to Gohan and later Goten, she becomes a quintessential overprotective and nagging mother, though she remains fundamentally well-meaning and deeply loving toward her family. While her power is negligible compared to the Z-Fighters, she is still one of the strongest human women in the world, possessing superhuman strength, speed, and durability that far exceed that of an ordinary person. Her martial arts style, refined through years of training with her father, is praised by Master Roshi for its resemblance to his own Kame style, and during her youth she holds her own against a heavily suppressed Goku in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament.
Chi-Chi's primary motivation throughout the series is securing a stable, safe, and academically successful future for her children, particularly Gohan. She is insistent that Gohan focus on his studies to become a scholar, as she does not want him to grow up without a proper education like Goku did or to constantly face the life-threatening dangers that accompany fighting. This focus on academic achievement often puts her at odds with Goku, who prioritizes training and combat, and she frequently becomes frustrated when he tries to involve their son in battles. However, she has been known to allow Gohan to fight under certain circumstances, such as when prize money is involved to pay for college tuition or when the threat is dire enough to warrant his participation. Despite her efforts to discourage fighting, Chi-Chi herself taught Goten martial arts, though she was as strict with his training as she was with Gohan's education. She maintains a negative association with the Super Saiyan transformation, initially believing it to be dyed hair, which she associates with delinquency in Japanese culture.
Chi-Chi's role in the story is primarily that of a domestic anchor for the Son family. Her marriage to Goku is built on a childhood promise she extracted from him, and she fulfills this vow after he wins the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. Although she loves Goku deeply and worries about him when he is injured or dead, she is frequently exasperated by his lack of financial contribution to the household and his single-minded focus on martial arts training. She often relies on her father's wealth to support the family, and she is shown to be envious of Bulma's financial situation. Over time, Chi-Chi develops a friendship with Bulma, as they share the unique struggle of being married to Saiyans and raising half-Saiyan children, although they still argue when their children compete against each other. Her relationship with Gohan is central to her character; her insistence on his education ultimately pays off, as he becomes a scholar in the final chapters of the original manga. She also becomes a grandmother to Pan, and in later stories, she becomes adamant that Pan be raised as a gentle girl so she does not become a battle-loving fighter like Goku.
In terms of abilities, Chi-Chi is a highly proficient martial artist who relies on physical strikes, agility, and speed rather than ki manipulation or flight. As a child, she wields a distinctive helmet equipped with a detachable, boomerang-like blade and the ability to fire laser beams that can cause significant explosions. Her power level is recorded at 130 units during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, and Daizenshuu guides place her power around 350 units during the Buu Saga. She is one of the strongest Earthling women, with her strength surpassing that of Videl, who has a power level of 70 at her debut. While she abandons regular training and combat after becoming a mother, she retains her physical conditioning and is still capable of performing high jumps, breaking through walls with only minor injuries, and delivering forceful blows that can harm seasoned fighters like Krillin.
