Description
Homura is a character created exclusively for the third Bleach film, and she first appears as a young girl living in the Rukongai district of the Soul Society. She has pale skin, large green eyes, and shoulder-length blonde hair with a distinctive reddish streak at the front. Her clothing resembles a tattered, white shinigami uniform with a yellow belt, and she is typically barefoot.
Homura possesses a dual nature in her personality. On the surface, she appears as a sweet, cheerful, and energetic adolescent. However, beneath this facade, she is stubborn, selfish, and quite cold, even towards her own brother Shizuku and the person she cares for most, Rukia Kuchiki. This disturbed personality and her irrational behavior stem from a century of suffering endured in Hueco Mundo, which also fostered a deep hatred for the shinigami.
The central motivation for Homura, alongside her brother Shizuku, is an intense desire to remain with Rukia. Long ago in the Inuzuri district of Rukongai, Rukia came to the aid of Homura and Shizuku, who had been attacked by a shinigami possessed by a Hollow. After the Hollow attempted to take over Rukia, the two siblings absorbed it and fled to Hueco Mundo. They returned to the Soul Society a century later with the wish to have Rukia give them names as she had once promised. When they felt their bond with Rukia was threatened, particularly by Ichigo Kurosaki, they used their unique powers to erase all memories of Rukia from everyone in the Soul Society, including Rukia herself, in an attempt to keep her for themselves alone.
Homura's key relationship is with Rukia, whom she views as a precious figure who once protected them. She is equally devoted to her brother Shizuku, and the two work in perfect sync to achieve their goals. While they deeply resent the shinigami who they believe have taken Rukia away, their primary conflict is with Ichigo, whose unbreakable connection to Rukia makes him immune to their memory-altering powers and their greatest obstacle.
Throughout the film, Homura begins as a seemingly innocent child, but her actions grow increasingly desperate and destructive. When Rukia starts to regain her memories of Ichigo, Homura and Shizuku, in a panic, decide to undergo a hollowfication process that fuses them with Rukia, transforming her into a powerful Hollow-like being called Dark Rukia. In her final moments, after being separated from Rukia by Ichigo, Homura shows a glimmer of remorse, suggesting she should be punished for not listening. However, Rukia instead finally gives her the name Homura, and the girl dies peacefully, grateful to have received the name she always wanted.
Homura possesses several notable abilities. Her primary power is teleportation, which is distinct from the shunpo or sonído techniques, and is accompanied by a puff of black smoke. She is also capable of taking other people with her when she teleports. She can seemingly defy gravity and remain suspended in the air to serve as a distraction for her brother. Finally, she shares the ability to fuse with her brother and with Rukia, which is the ultimate expression of her desire for them to become one entity.
