Description
Keiko Yukimura is a central figure in the anime Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files, serving as the childhood friend and eventual fiancée of the protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi. At the start of the series, she is fourteen years old, a student at Sarayashiki Junior High School, and the class representative known for her excellent grades and dependability. Her family runs a ramen restaurant, the Yukimura Diner, where she is often seen helping out. Physically, Keiko has dark brown hair, which she initially wears in two short braids until it is burned while she is rescuing Yusuke's body from a fire, after which she cuts it into a short bob. As the series progresses into its final chapters, she grows taller, her hair becomes long again, and her figure matures.

In terms of personality, Keiko is in many ways the opposite of the delinquent Yusuke. She is generally sweet, calm, and studious, but she possesses a notable short temper that is frequently triggered by Yusuke's insensitive comments and perverse antics, such as groping her. As class representative, she often scolds him for his truancy and fighting, but this stems from a deep-seated desire to protect him and see him succeed. Despite her often-frustrated demeanor, she demonstrates remarkable patience, loyalty, and thoughtfulness. She patiently waits for Yusuke throughout his various ordeals as a Spirit Detective and later as a half-demon, showing a profound understanding that his dangerous calling was the first place he truly felt he belonged.

Keiko's role in the story is primarily that of the emotional anchor and love interest for Yusuke, representing the human world he fights to protect. Her most critical act occurs early in the series when Yusuke is killed in a car accident. To be resurrected, his body needed to be preserved and someone who genuinely cared for him had to kiss him. Keiko, guided by a dream, not only protects his body from being cremated but provides the kiss that brings him back to life. Despite Yusuke's attempts to keep her away from the dangers of the Spirit World, she is frequently targeted by his enemies. She is kidnapped by Hiei, who attempts to turn her into a demon slave, and is later attacked by mind-controlled humans sent by the demon Suzaku. These events gradually pull her into his world, and she eventually learns the full truth about his missions, even traveling to the Dark Tournament to support him from the stands alongside Botan and Shizuru Kuwabara.

Her key relationships are defined by her interactions with Yusuke's circle. Her most significant bond is with Yusuke, which evolves from an unspoken childhood affection to an official romantic relationship by the end of the series. She shares a close friendship with the spirit guide Botan, who often protects her and explains the supernatural events Keiko cannot see. She also becomes a good friend to Yusuke's human allies, particularly Kazuma Kuwabara and his sister Shizuru, and later to the ice maiden Yukina.

Keiko undergoes subtle but meaningful development throughout the narrative. Initially kept completely in the dark about Yusuke's activities, she transitions to a state of knowing but powerless observer, often left behind worrying. A significant turning point occurs before the Three Kings Saga, when Yusuke announces his intention to leave the human world for three years to train in the Demon World. Feeling exhausted from constantly waiting, Keiko tells him she is giving up on him and runs away. However, that night, Yusuke visits her family's restaurant and proposes marriage, promising to return. Though she does not immediately believe his seriousness, her love for him compels her to wait. By the end of the series, she has matured into a seventeen or eighteen-year-old young woman attending a prestigious girls' high school and preparing for college entrance exams to become a teacher. When Yusuke finally returns to the beach where she is waiting, she joyfully embraces and kisses him, confirming their future together.

While Keiko possesses no supernatural spiritual abilities like Yusuke or his allies, she is known for one distinctly non-powered talent: the Keiko Slap. This is an incredibly powerful, two-handed slap that she delivers when enraged, often in response to Yusuke's harassment. The blow is strong enough to send Yusuke tumbling head over heels and has proven effective enough to knock out infected humans and even low-class demons, a feat Yusuke admits hurts more than most punches he receives. Beyond this, her notable abilities lie in her academics, as a top student, and in domestic skills, as her hobbies include cooking and cleaning.
