Description
Chun-Li, as she appears in the 1995 anime series Street Fighter II V, is a distinct reimagining of the classic video game character, adapted to fit the show's unique narrative that departs from the established game canon. In this version, Chun-Li is not a seasoned Interpol agent, but rather a seventeen-year-old Chinese girl who works as a tour guide in Hong Kong. She is also a dedicated student of kung fu, trained by her father, Dorai, who holds the position of the highest-ranking police chief in Hong Kong. This background grounds her in the world of martial arts from a young age, but her initial role is that of a civilian rather than an officer.

In terms of personality, this iteration of Chun-Li is depicted with a notable innocence and a wide-eyed demeanor, a significant shift from her more determined and world-weary game counterpart. She is generally cheerful, but her life becomes complicated when she is assigned to be a tour guide for the two main protagonists, Ryu and Ken Masters. Through her association with them, she is pulled into a globe-trotting adventure that puts her in the path of the villainous M. Bison and his Shadaloo organization. Her primary motivation becomes intertwined with her growing feelings for Ken Masters, whom she begins dating, as well as her desire to confront Bison, who becomes a direct threat to her and her loved ones.

Her role in the story's central conflict is deeply personal and becomes a catalyst for her character's most dramatic moment. After encountering the villain Vega, she becomes the target of his obsessive affection, leading him to cast a love potion on her that puts her in a daze-like state. Later, in a pivotal turn of events, she challenges M. Bison to a fight and is soundly defeated. Following this loss, she is captured and brainwashed, becoming one of Bison's mind-controlled soldiers, donning a modified version of her classic outfit. In this state, she is transformed from a friendly ally into an adversary that Ryu and Ken must ultimately confront and save. Her development is thus not one of self-driven growth but of being rescued, as she only regains her consciousness and senses after Bison is finally defeated by Ryu and Ken.

Key relationships define her arc throughout the series. Her father, Dorai, represents her connection to justice and martial arts. Her romance with Ken Masters is a central plot point, and their relationship continues after the ordeal with Bison, with Chun-Li and Ken officially dating. However, this storyline concludes on a bittersweet note, as the couple eventually breaks up after three years. The primary reason cited for the separation is Chun-Li's deep homesickness for Hong Kong and her dislike for living in America, despite her continued affection for Ken.

Regarding notable abilities, she is a proficient kung fu student, having trained under her father. However, her skills are portrayed as being far below the level of a powerful fighter like M. Bison, which leads directly to her defeat and subsequent brainwashing. Her fighting style is therefore presented as competent but not yet master-level, fitting her young age and status as a student rather than a professional fighter or agent. Her visual design in the series also reflects this more casual and youthful interpretation, often appearing in a variety of casual outfits, including a red sleeveless qipao with her hair tied in a high ponytail, rather than her more formal and iconic blue qipao from the games. When she is brainwashed, her appearance shifts to a light blue version of her fighting outfit with her hair worn loose, visually signifying her loss of self.
