Description
Broly, as he appears in Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming, is the second film appearance of the original version of the character from the 1990s film trilogy. He is a Saiyan warrior known as the Legendary Super Saiyan, a form that emerges once every thousand years according to Saiyan legend. His background is rooted in tragedy and immense, uncontrollable power. He was born on the now-destroyed Planet Vegeta on the same day as Goku, with a power level of ten thousand, which was exceptionally high for a newborn. This power frightened King Vegeta, who saw the infant as a threat to his son Prince Vegeta's birthright and ordered Broly and his father, Paragus, to be executed. The baby Broly survived being stabbed and left for dead, and he and Paragus narrowly escaped the destruction of their home planet at the hands of Frieza. Broly's psyche was traumatized in his infancy by the loud crying of the Saiyan baby Kakarot, the future Goku, who was in a nearby nursery pod. This childhood trauma created a deep-seated, irrational hatred for Goku that defines his actions.

In Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming, Broly's personality is that of a nearly mindless force of destruction, driven by a singular, obsessive rage toward Goku. When docile, he appears silent and almost dormant, but his mental state has severely deteriorated. He has lost the ability to speak coherently, communicating only by roaring and manically repeating the name Kakarot. He does not possess a complex motivation or a desire for conquest. His entire existence is focused on finding and killing Goku, whose power and very presence trigger his Saiyan instincts and unleash his uncontrollable fury. When he mistakes Goku's son, Goten, for his nemesis due to their similar appearance and cries, this rage is instantly reawakened, making him a mindless engine of destruction with no regard for anything but violence.

Broly's role in the story is that of a returning, seemingly unstoppable antagonist. Seven years after his previous defeat on New Planet Vegeta, Broly’s space pod crashes on Earth. He is severely injured and, as the weather turns cold, he becomes encased in ice at the bottom of a crater, remaining in a state of suspended animation. He is accidentally awakened by the crying of a young Goten, who is searching for the Dragon Balls with his friend Trunks and Videl. The sound triggers Broly’s psychosis, and he begins a rampage. He first effortlessly defeats Videl, then overwhelms both Goten and Trunks, who are forced to flee. Gohan, Goten’s older brother, arrives to protect them and battles Broly. Despite initially holding his own and even reaching Super Saiyan 2, Gohan is ultimately outmatched by Broly’s raw power. The climax of the film sees Gohan, Goten, and a miraculous, spiritual appearance of their father Goku combining their energy into a single Kamehameha wave, which finally pushes Broly into the sun, destroying him.

Broly’s key relationships are stark and primal. His relationship with his father, Paragus, is an abusive one of control. Paragus fears his son’s power and uses a mind-control device to keep him in a state of docile obedience. While Broly seems loyal to him when controlled, he has killed his father during a previous rampage, showing that any bond between them is fragile and easily severed by Broly’s rage. His only other relationship of note is his obsessive fixation on Goku. This is not a rivalry but a pathological hatred. Goku is the singular trigger for Broly’s transformation into the Legendary Super Saiyan, and this hate is so powerful that it transfers to Goku's son, Goten, because of their resemblance. Broly views Goten as Goku and attacks him relentlessly, his deteriorated mind unable to tell the difference.

In terms of development, Broly exhibits little to no character growth in this film. He is portrayed as a static force of nature. He begins the story as a frozen, dormant monster and ends it as the same entity, only destroyed rather than defeated through character change or reason. His only evolution is a physical one, as he powers up from his standard Super Saiyan form to his full Legendary Super Saiyan state to overcome Gohan’s Super Saiyan 2. However, this is a power escalation born of rage, not personal development. He remains an unchanging, tragic figure whose immense potential is forever locked within a shattered mind.

Broly possesses many notable abilities common to Saiyans, such as superhuman strength, speed, durability, the ability to fly, and the manipulation of ki energy. What sets him apart is his form as the Legendary Super Saiyan. In this state, his physical size and muscle mass increase dramatically, and he is described in guidebooks as having infinite power. His power is overwhelming enough to effortlessly defeat multiple Super Saiyans at once, including Gohan, who was stronger than his father had been at the time of his death. Unlike other Saiyans, his power seems to grow in an uncontrolled, reactive spiral as his rage increases. He can fire powerful green-colored energy blasts, including a devastating Omega Blaster, an energy sphere he can hurl at his opponents. He is also durable enough to survive being submerged in lava by protecting himself with an energy barrier. Broly’s fighting style is purely brutal and instinctual, relying on his massive power advantage to overpower his foes rather than any refined skill or technique.
