Description
Janemba serves as the primary antagonist in the Dragon Ball Z film Fusion Reborn. This entity is not born in the traditional sense but is created by accident in the afterlife. A young, lazy ogre tasked with monitoring the Soul Cleansing Machine neglects his duties, causing the machine to overload and explode. The explosion releases generations of accumulated evil energy, which engulfs the ogre and transforms him into a massive, childlike demon of pure evil. The resulting creature is Janemba.
Janemba exists in two distinct forms, each with a markedly different personality. In his initial form, he is a colossal, rotund figure with yellow skin and purple limbs. This version of Janemba possesses a limited, childlike intelligence and seems to only be capable of saying his own name. He does not appear to be malicious in a calculated way; instead, he treats combat as a form of play, reshaping the landscape of Hell into a colorful, surreal fantasy world made of jelly-like cubes and engaging in battle with an ignorantly innocent joy. His behavior is somewhat similar to that of the villain Majin Buu, finding amusement in fighting rather than focusing on pure destruction.
When cornered by Goku, who transforms into a Super Saiyan 3, Janemba is forced to evolve. This leads to his second and far more powerful form, often referred to as Super Janemba. In this state, he compresses his massive body into a leaner, more human-sized warrior. His skin turns a deep red, and he gains purple armor-like plating on his shoulders and head, complete with two curved horns. This transformation also represents a complete shift in personality. The playful, childish demeanor is gone, replaced by a deadly serious, intelligent, and sadistic nature. Super Janemba is fully aware of his overwhelming power and relishes the chaos and suffering he causes, often breaking into demented laughter as he toys with his opponents.
Janemba's primary motivation is not a complex goal but an innate drive for anarchy and control. He possesses a remarkable ability to manipulate reality and matter to suit his whims, doing so with no regard for the consequences. Shortly after his creation, he traps King Yemma within a crystalline barrier and warps the laws of the afterlife, inadvertently causing the barrier between the living world and the dead to dissolve. This action resurrects countless past villains like Frieza and allows them to rampage on Earth, though this seems to be an indirect effect of his reality-warping rather than a calculated plan.
In the story of Fusion Reborn, Janemba serves as the ultimate obstacle that forces the two main Saiyan rivals, Goku and Vegeta, to cooperate. After easily overpowering both a Super Saiyan 3 Goku and a Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta simultaneously, the two warriors realize they cannot defeat him individually. This dire situation leads Vegeta to reluctantly agree to learn the Fusion Dance, a technique Goku proposes. Janemba's role is to be the overwhelming force that makes this desperate measure necessary. He directly battles Goku, Vegeta, and a failed fusion known as Veku, and is only briefly stalled by the hero Pikkon, who discovers Janemba's strange weakness to insults, which cause his body to crack like glass.
Key relationships are primarily adversarial. His main opponents are Goku, who pushes him to transform; Vegeta, who joins the fight; and the successful fusion of the two, Gogeta, who is the only character strong enough to destroy him. He also has a brief but notable interaction with Pikkon, who exploits his unusual vulnerability. Ultimately, Super Janemba is completely obliterated by Gogeta's Stardust Breaker (also known as the Soul Punisher) technique, which purifies the evil energy comprising his body and causes him to revert to the terrified young ogre he once was.
Notable abilities are the defining feature of Janemba. He possesses powerful reality-warping capabilities, allowing him to change the environment of entire dimensions. A signature technique, the Bunkai Teleport, allows him to deconstruct his physical form into floating cubes and reassemble it elsewhere, effectively teleporting. He can create dimensional portals to redirect an opponent's energy attacks back at them or to attack from unexpected angles with his fist or a sword. In his second form, he demonstrates immense matter manipulation, turning a simple club into a sharp, red dimension-cutting sword. He can also fire powerful ki blasts from the four holes on his belly, create small clones of himself or his enemies, and stretch his limbs to great lengths. Despite his monstrous strength, his most unusual weakness is that he is physically harmed by verbal insults, a trait that causes him to momentarily crack under verbal abuse.
