TV-Series
Description
Alice Maresato is a young girl who becomes one of the main survivors in the group. She is seven years old and has shoulder-length pink hair with bangs, purple eyes, and a notable mole located under her left eye. She typically wears a white headband in her hair.
Alice is introduced to the story when the main group discovers her in the aftermath of a terrible tragedy. Her father, a newspaper reporter, was killed by other human survivors who refused to let them into their home for shelter. After his death, Alice is left alone and vulnerable to attack, which is when Takashi Komuro and Kohta Hirano arrive to rescue her from the approaching threat. Despite the horrific nature of her introduction, Alice maintains a generally positive and cheerful attitude, which other characters like Takashi and Saeko note as remarkable given what she has endured. She is described as innocent and passive, often serving as the one member of the group who can keep a bright outlook despite all the troubles and loss surrounding her.
In terms of personality, Alice looks up to the older members of the group as older brothers and sisters and forms particularly strong bonds with certain individuals. She is unwilling to leave anyone in the group, even if it means putting herself at risk, because she has already experienced the pain of losing a parent and fears empty promises of being reunited later. She shows remarkable emotional intelligence for her age, recognizing when someone is preparing to sacrifice themselves because she saw that same expression on her father's face before he died. This awareness makes her resistant to being separated from the group for her own safety.
Several key relationships define her place in the survivor group. She becomes very attached to Kohta Hirano, who was instrumental in her rescue, and the two share many lighthearted moments together, such as singing Row Row Row Your Boat in both Japanese and English. She also has a sister-like relationship with Saya Takagi, who can be strict with her at times but also gives her the nickname Munchkin and acts in a maternal way toward her. Saya and Alice bond further when they select new, more practical clothes together at a shopping mall. Alice also forms a close connection with Takashi Komuro, who physically rescued her, and she becomes worried whenever he is in a bad mood. Throughout her journey, she is almost always accompanied by a small dog named Zeke, whom the group picked up around the same time they saved her.
Alice does not participate in combat, and the older members of the group go to great lengths to ensure she never has to fight. However, she does possess some notable abilities that prove useful. She is bilingual, able to speak both Japanese and English fluently. She also demonstrates remarkable skill at riding a bicycle, performing stunts that impress the others when they take refuge at a local mall. For self-defense, she is given firecrackers by a police officer named Asami Nakaoka, which she can use to distract the zombies if she ever finds herself cornered. Her primary role within the group is as a source of emotional support and a reminder of what they are fighting to protect, with Kohta even stating that her weapons are Takashi and himself.
Throughout the story, Alice shows development in her resilience and maturity. While she is often seen crying when in danger or when someone she cares about is threatened, she also demonstrates courage by refusing to be left behind and by comforting others when they argue. She takes the initiative to find Kohta when he storms off after a disagreement with Takashi, showing that despite her youth, she actively works to keep the group together. Her ability to maintain her cheerful disposition while carrying the grief of losing her father marks her as emotionally strong, and other characters frequently comment on how well she has coped with her circumstances.
