Description
Hiroshi Nohara is a main character in the Crayon Shin-chan series, serving as the patriarch of the Nohara family and the primary source of income for his household. At 35 years of age with blood type O and a height of 180 centimeters, he originally comes from Daisen in Akita Prefecture but now resides with his family in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture. He works as a section chief, a kakarichou or low-level manager, at the Futaba Corporation, a trading company where he has been employed for 15 years after dropping out of college. As the stereotypical Japanese salaryman, he endures crowded train commutes, works eight-hour days, and occasionally enjoys the nightlife with colleagues, giving his entire paycheck to his wife Misae each month while still paying off a 32-year mortgage on the family home.

His personality blends a laid-back and sometimes goofy demeanor with a deep-seated sense of responsibility and love for his family. He often acts playfully and even joins in on his son Shinnosuke's pranks, which usually leads to both of them being scolded by Misae. In his role as a father, he generally prefers to guide his children with patience and encouragement rather than harsh discipline, often attempting to defuse his wife's temper with calming interjections. However, beneath this relaxed exterior lies a man of strong character; when his family is threatened or faces a crisis, he becomes a reliable and courageous protector, demonstrating a strong sense of justice that he passes on to his son. Despite being the head of the household, he is often weak against Misae's dominance and is commonly the target of jokes from his children, relatives, and neighbors, which can make him appear unreliable in everyday situations.

One of his most prominent and recurring character traits is his weakness for beautiful women, a trait he shares with his son Shinnosuke. He often finds himself attracted to younger women, such as the office lady Yumi Soka or the university student Nanako Ohara, which frequently gets him into comical trouble with his wife. Despite this tendency to flirt, he remains fundamentally faithful and loyal to Misae, with his infidelity remaining in his dreams rather than his waking life. He is a devoted husband who, despite their bickering over small matters, shares a deep and loving bond with his wife, and they always reconcile after their arguments. His love for his family is immense; he once wept at the thought of leaving them for a month-long business trip and has declared that he does not care about his job or even the end of the world as long as his family is together.

His role in the story is primarily that of a loving, if occasionally bumbling, father figure who balances his responsibilities at work with his life at home. He is the sole earner for the Nohara family, which includes his wife Misae, his son Shinnosuke, his daughter Himawari, and their pet dog Shiro. His key relationship with his son is particularly warm and supportive, as he is patient and friendly with Shinnosuke, even as he tries to set a good example for him. He also shares a gentler bond with his daughter Himawari, whom he sometimes spoils, and he also shows care for the family dog. At his workplace, he is respected as a section chief and has subordinates like Kawaguchi, though he must endure the typical stresses and politics of corporate life. In terms of development, while his core personality remains consistent for the purpose of comedy, the series often highlights his growth in moments of crisis where he steps up to protect his family, and he demonstrated maturity by quitting smoking for the sake of his unborn daughter Himawari.

Hiroshi is also notable for several distinct abilities and quirks. He is famous for his extraordinarily powerful foot odor, a running gag in the series that is so potent it can knock out family members, friends, animals, and even monsters and robots in the movies. This smell, which he humorously claims is like jasmine, is sometimes even used as a weapon. Beyond this comedic trait, he possesses several practical skills; he is a capable driver of both cars and motorcycles, has been shown to know some form of kung fu, and is good at household repairs and building things like a doghouse. He also enjoys leisure activities such as golf, hot baths, and has a knowledge of science fiction from his school days. While he may seem like an average middle-management worker, in the series' films and special episodes, his skills are often exaggerated, and he frequently saves the day using clever tricks, his fighting abilities, and even his infamous smelly socks.
