Description
Mitsy Nohara, whose original Japanese name is Misae Nohara, is the mother of the Nohara family in the anime and manga series Shin Chan. She is 29 years old, though she frequently tells people she is 24 or 25. Her maiden name is Misae Koyama. She is a full-time housewife, the classical homemaker of postwar Japan, who handles cleaning, cooking, laundry, sewing, and childcare with varying degrees of success. At heart, she is a caring and nurturing person, but her positive qualities are often offset by her many shortcomings. She is strong-willed and has a short temper, and she can be hypocritical: she issues strict rules for her husband and children but does not hesitate to break them herself as soon as she is out of their sight. She is very vain and sensitive about her appearance, and her son Shin-chan frequently teases her about being flat-chested or overweight. Her favorite pastimes include taking naps and talking on the phone. She loves shopping for bargains but tends to buy in excessive quantities, which undermines her own attempts to save money. She also secretly hoards money for her personal use. Despite these flaws, she genuinely loves her family and works hard to care for them. She is the source of many diet and savings plans, almost all of which fail within the first week. In the story, Mitsy serves as the primary authority figure and the main comic foil to Shin-chan’s antics. She administers memorable punishments—often physical—when her husband or children disobey, but these punishments are played for comedy. Her key relationships are with her husband Hiroshi Nohara, whom she frequently scolds but ultimately cares for deeply; her son Shinnosuke Nohara, or Shin-chan, who constantly tests her patience; her baby daughter Himawari, whom she tends to spoil; and her two sisters, Masae and Musae, as well as her parents and in-laws, who appear from time to time. Over the course of the series, Mitsy shows moments of generosity and occasional growth in patience, though her core personality remains largely consistent for comedic effect. Notable abilities include her extraordinary physical strength when angered, earning her the nickname Japan’s strongest housewife, and her resourcefulness in managing domestic crises with a combination of aggression and quick thinking. She also has a talent for creative, exaggerated forms of scolding and discipline. Her development is subtle; while she remains the same flawed yet loving mother at heart, episodes occasionally highlight her capacity for self-reflection and deep familial love.
