Description
Harry Nohara, known in the original Japanese version as Hiroshi Nohara, is a central character in the anime as the father of the Nohara family. He is 35 years old and works as a section chief, or low-level manager, at the Futaba Corporation, making him the sole income earner for his household. He was born in Omagari, a village in Daisen, Akita, and now lives with his family in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture. As a stereotypical Japanese salaryman, his daily life involves long working hours, enduring crowded trains, and occasionally going out for drinks with colleagues and bosses. Despite the pressures of his job and a long 32-year mortgage on the family home, he remains a devoted and loving father to his son, Shinnosuke, and his daughter, Himawari.
In terms of personality, Harry is generally a quiet, reasonable, and easygoing man who often serves as a calm counterbalance to his wife Misae's more explosive temper. He is playful and shares a particularly strong bond with his son, Shin-chan, with whom he has much in common. His most notable flaw, which he has unfortunately passed down to his son, is a tendency to be easily distracted by attractive young women. This habit frequently lands him in trouble with Misae, who is quick to punish him with her iron fist. While he may have wandering eyes and even dreams about office romances, he is ultimately faithful to his wife and deeply committed to his family.
His role in the story is that of the typical Japanese father, navigating the comedic and chaotic adventures of daily life alongside his eccentric family. He is the authority figure who, unlike Misae's stern discipline, prefers to defuse situations with a gentle "maa, maa" (now, now) and have a calm, albeit often ineffective, talk with his son. He is also known to use the promise of beautiful women as an incentive to get Shin-chan to cooperate, a tactic that usually backfires when Misae finds out. Despite being the breadwinner, he hands over his entire paycheck to his wife, who maintains strict control over the family's finances, leaving him with a small allowance.
Key relationships define his character. With his wife, Misae, their dynamic is one of constant bickering over small issues, but it is underpinned by genuine love and respect. He has never laid a hand on her and is shown weeping at the thought of a long business trip away from her and the children. His relationship with his son, Shin-chan, is one of mutual amusement and exasperation. They are often partners in crime when it comes to ogling women, but just as often, Shin-chan will betray his father's secrets to his mother for a laugh. Despite this, Harry is a caring father who sets a good example by rarely coming home drunk and preferring to spend his free time with the family.
Regarding development, while his core traits remain consistent, his deep care for his family is regularly reinforced. He quit smoking as a favor to Misae when she was pregnant with Himawari. In the series' films and specials, he often steps up to become a true hero, showing incredible courage and resourcefulness to protect his loved ones, moving beyond his typical goofy and lazy demeanor to display a strong sense of justice and responsibility.
Harry also possesses several notable and humorous abilities. He is surprisingly skilled at driving, household repairs, and has a knack for kung fu fighting techniques that he uses in dire situations. However, his most legendary "ability" is the extraordinarily potent smell of his feet and socks. The odor is so powerful and foul that it can knock out his family members, friends, the dog Shiro, and even monsters or robots, often being used as a comedic weapon of last resort.
