Description
Piccolo Daimao, also called King Piccolo and Lord Piccolo, is the main antagonist of the 2009 film Dragonball Evolution. The character is a film adaptation of the Dragon Ball villain King Piccolo, with elements drawn from his reincarnation Piccolo Jr. In this version, Piccolo Daimao is a Namekian, a humanoid alien of great power, who first came to Earth two thousand years before the events of the story and laid waste to the land. To stop him, seven mystics used a powerful sealing technique known as the Mafuba to trap him, and he remained imprisoned for the next two millennia.
The film portrays Piccolo Daimao as cold, ruthless, and consumed by vengeance. His long imprisonment left him embittered and intensely hostile toward humanity. He is calculating and cruel, shows little compassion, and is willing to destroy anyone who stands between him and his goals. His central motivation is conquest: he wants to gather the seven Dragon Balls, summon the dragon Shenron, and use the wish to take control of Earth and enslave its people. Revenge against the human race that imprisoned him also fuels his actions after his release.
In the story, Piccolo Daimao escapes his seal and begins hunting for the Dragon Balls with the assistance of his ninja-like henchwoman Mai, killing anyone in his path. His search brings him to the home of the young martial artist Goku, where he attacks Goku's grandfather Gohan and mortally wounds him while seizing the four-star Dragon Ball. This act sets Goku on his journey to find the remaining Dragon Balls, learn martial arts from Master Roshi, and eventually confront Piccolo. After Piccolo collects all seven Dragon Balls and arrives at the Dragon Temple to summon Shenron, Goku and his allies intervene. During the final battle, Piccolo reveals that Goku is connected to the Great Ape known as Ōzaru, having been sent to Earth as an infant to serve Piccolo's plan of destruction. When a solar eclipse triggers Goku's transformation into Ōzaru, Piccolo uses the chaos to his advantage, and Master Roshi dies attempting to seal him with the Mafuba. Goku eventually overcomes the transformation and appears to destroy Piccolo with the Kamehameha Wave, though the film ends with Piccolo still alive and being tended to by Mai.
Piccolo Daimao's key relationship is his enmity with Goku, who is presented as his destined opponent and an obstacle to his plans. He also has a bond of service with Mai, who remains loyal to him throughout the film. His most direct act of cruelty is the killing of Gohan, which shapes Goku's entire quest, and his conflict with Master Roshi culminates in the old master's failed attempt to reseal him. For humanity as a whole, Piccolo Daimao is a figure of terror and a would-be tyrant.
In terms of development, Piccolo Daimao begins the film as an ancient sealed menace and becomes an active, immediate threat once freed. The centuries of imprisonment are central to his characterization, having deepened his hatred and strengthened his resolve to conquer. Although he is seemingly defeated at the end of the film, his survival suggests that his ambitions were not fully ended.
As a Namekian, Piccolo Daimao possesses superhuman strength, speed, and endurance, making him a formidable hand-to-hand combatant. He can use ki-based energy attacks in battle, and his durability is such that he is able to survive a direct hit from Goku's powerful Kamehameha Wave. He also has knowledge of the Dragon Balls and the ritual needed to summon Shenron, as well as a connection to the Great Ape Ōzaru and the role it was meant to play in his conquest of Earth.
