Description
Lord Piccolo is the primary antagonist of the 2009 live‑action film Dragonball: Evolution. He is a Namekian, an ancient alien being who was once a force for good but became corrupted after being imprisoned for two thousand years. The confinement, which he describes as a hell of being shackled so tightly that every atom of his body stood compacted, transformed him into a bitter and vengeful figure. Upon escaping, his sole motivation is to exact revenge on humanity and the world that imprisoned him.
In terms of personality, Lord Piccolo is cold, ruthless, and utterly consumed by his desire for vengeance. He exhibits a profound loneliness; he is often depicted floating above landscapes, brooding and staring at his feet, never appreciating the beauty around him. This isolation fuels his hatred, and he directs his fury not only at those who trapped him but at their descendants and at the entire planet. Revenge is the driving force behind every action he takes.
His role in the story is that of a conquering warlord seeking to collect all seven Dragon Balls in order to summon the eternal dragon Shenron and unleash the Oozaru (the Great Ape) during a solar eclipse, thereby destroying the world and enslaving humanity. He operates with the assistance of his loyal henchwoman Mai, a shape‑shifting ninja who aids him in tracking the Dragon Balls and eliminating obstacles. Lord Piccolo also reveals to Goku that he was responsible for sending the infant Goku to Earth as a minion, intended to be a weapon for his conquest. This establishes a key relationship: Goku is both his former servant and his primary adversary.
Throughout the film, Lord Piccolo shows no significant character development; he remains a single‑minded villain focused on destruction. However, in the extended narrative of the video game adaptation, he survives his apparent defeat and adopts the alias Neo Piccolo, continuing his attempts at conquest. His defeat at Goku’s hands does not kill him, and he is last seen being tended to by Mai, implying a potential return.
Lord Piccolo possesses a variety of notable abilities. As a Namekian, he has superhuman strength, speed, and endurance. He can generate warriors known as Fu‑Lum from his own blood, which serve as his minions. He is also highly skilled in the use of ki, able to fire energy blasts and perform techniques such as the Mafuba, a sealing technique he himself uses. Most significantly, he can control the Oozaru transformation, turning Goku into a giant ape during the eclipse. He is also capable of flight and demonstrates regenerative powers, surviving injuries that would be fatal to ordinary beings. In the video game continuation, he uses a form called Neo Piccolo, which enhances his already formidable combat prowess.
