Description
Junpei Manaka is the central protagonist of Ichigo 100%, a character whose journey is defined by his passion for filmmaking and his complicated romantic entanglements throughout middle and high school. His background is established at the very beginning of the story when, as a third-year middle school student, he sneaks away to the school roof. There, he witnesses a beautiful girl fall in front of him, catching a glimpse of her strawberry-patterned panties. This moment becomes a catalyst for the entire plot, as he becomes determined to find this mysterious girl, believing the scene would be perfect for a movie. His primary motivation is his dream to become a successful film director, a goal he pursues with consistent effort from a young age.
In terms of personality, Junpei is generally presented as a kind, gentle, and encouraging individual who is willing to go out of his way to help a friend in need. These positive traits are what primarily attract the various female characters to him. However, he is also notoriously indecisive, particularly when it comes to his romantic relationships. This passivity and inability to clearly choose between the girls who have feelings for him is a major source of conflict in the story and can lead to him inadvertently hurting those around him. While he can be oblivious to the obvious crushes others have on him, he also has moments of boldness, sometimes acting on his impulses in ways that are driven by teenage curiosity or desire. He is depicted as an average student academically, but this is contrasted by his growing talent in his chosen field.
Junpei's role in the story is that of a budding artist whose personal and professional lives are deeply intertwined. Upon entering Izumizaka High School, the only school with a film club, he discovers the club has been converted into a computer-graphics club. Demonstrating initiative, he gathers the necessary members to start a new Film Studies Club, with Aya Toujou, Satsuki Kitaoji, and his friends Rikiya Komiyama and Hiroshi Sotomura joining him. Over the course of high school, the club produces one film each year, with Junpei serving as the director.
His key relationships form the core of the narrative. The two most significant are with Aya Toujou and Tsukasa Nishino. Aya is a shy, glasses-wearing girl who is a gifted writer. Junpei initially overlooks her but confides his filmmaking dream to her, and she becomes his closest confidante and creative collaborator, writing the screenplays for his films. It is eventually revealed that she is the mystery girl from the roof. Tsukasa Nishino is the popular and beautiful school idol. Believing her to be the mystery girl, Junpei confesses to her and is surprised when she accepts, beginning an on-and-off romantic relationship. Satsuki Kitaoji is a fiery girl he meets in high school. After a rocky start, they discover they have many common interests, and she falls in love with him. Another important relationship is with his childhood friend Yui Minamito, who has a habit of sleeping naked and stays with his family, though their relationship remains platonic and sibling-like.
Junpei undergoes significant development throughout the story. His talent and passion for cinematography and directing gradually develop from a simple dream into a promising career. By the epilogue, set four years after high school, he has won a small award for his work and is invited to join the company of an established director, marking his evolution into a rising star in the film world. On a personal level, while he spends much of the story being indecisive between Aya and Tsukasa, he eventually makes a definitive choice to be with Tsukasa, acknowledging that while Aya was his first love, Tsukasa has become truly important to him. In a final act of maturity, he chooses to separate from Tsukasa so they can both focus on their individual dreams, with a promise to reunite in the future. The story concludes with him honoring that promise, asking to rekindle their relationship. His notable ability is his skill in filmmaking, particularly his directorial eye and composition, which earn him praise and professional recognition despite his young age.
