Description
In the third Dragon Ball film, Mystical Adventure, the character Chaozu is given a drastically different role from his usual portrayal in the main series. Instead of being a student of the Crane School, he is reimagined as the young and somewhat naive emperor of the Mifan Empire. In this setting, his loyal companion Tien Shinhan serves as his personal bodyguard and most trusted confidant. Chaozu is depicted as a small, doll-like figure with pale white skin and distinct red cheeks, maintaining his iconic appearance but placed within a royal context.

His primary motivation throughout the film is a deeply personal and sentimental one: to be reunited with his missing wife, a person named Ran Ran. This desire makes him vulnerable to manipulation, as the story’s antagonists, Minister Shen and General Tao, exploit his loneliness. They convince the young emperor that they are gathering the Dragon Balls to help find Ran Ran, using this promise to secure his cooperation and maintain their influence over the throne. Chaozu is portrayed as a quiet and somewhat sheltered ruler who places great faith in those around him, particularly Tien.

The core of his role in the story revolves around this deception. Chaozu is unaware that Minister Shen’s true plan is to seize control of the Mifan Empire. The plot, which also involves a martial arts tournament held in his kingdom, is a ruse designed by Shen to eliminate his enemies and ultimately the emperor himself. The relationship between Chaozu and Tien is the emotional anchor of this subplot. Tien is torn between his duty to follow his master, Shen, and his genuine loyalty and affection for the emperor he is sworn to protect. This conflict culminates when Shen orders Tien to kill Chaozu, a command Tien ultimately rejects in favor of saving his friend.

The most significant development for Chaozu occurs at the film's climax, after Tien defeats Shen. The nature of his "wife" is finally revealed. Ran Ran is not a real person at all, but a cherished, life-sized porcelain doll that Chaozu loves. This revelation underscores his childlike innocence and the tragic extent of his manipulation. Tien returns the doll to him, and while the truth is bittersweet, Chaozu appears content to have his beloved Ran Ran back. Through this experience, he loses his manipulative advisors but reaffirms the genuine bond with his loyal bodyguard.

In terms of notable abilities, Chaozu is portrayed as a powerful psychic, a trait consistent with his original character. He demonstrates skills in telekinesis and telepathy, which complement his status as a ruler who relies on the physical protection of Tien. His diminutive and innocent appearance belies his potential strength, though in the film, his role is more focused on the emotional and political narrative than on direct combat. His character in Mystical Adventure presents a unique and poignant take on Chaozu, highlighting themes of innocence, betrayal, and loyalty within a non-canonical and self-contained story.
