Description
In the film Dragon Ball: The Path to Power, which retells the early adventures of Goku, the character known as Android 8 is a significant figure encountered during the battle against the Red Ribbon Army. He is also referred to as Eighter, a friendly nickname given to him by Goku. Android 8 is an artificial human, a creation of the Red Ribbon Army's scientific division. His physical appearance is a direct homage to the classic cinematic interpretation of Frankenstein's monster. He is a large and stocky individual with a towering, cylindrical cranium, short dark blue hair, thick brows, no visible eyebrows, large oval eyes, a wide nose, and a prominent jaw. Two distinct stitched scars mark his appearance, one running across his forehead and another on his left cheek. In this film, his attire consists of an orange sweater beneath a teal suit, all covered by a sheepskin waistcoat.
The core of Android 8's personality stands in stark contrast to his intimidating exterior. He is fundamentally a kind, gentle, and peace-loving being who detests violence. Initially introduced while under the control of the tyrannical General White at Muscle Tower, he is ordered to attack Goku. For a time, he complies as a mindless brute following commands. However, his innate emotional core quickly reasserts itself, and he refuses to continue harming the young boy. This act of defiance leads General White to brand him a failure, a waste of the considerable resources used to create him. His primary motivation is simply to live a peaceful existence without conflict. Unlike his role in the original story, this version of Android 8 is much more willing to engage in combat when provoked or when his friends are threatened. He is shown to be cheerful, capable of enjoying simple pleasures like playing in the snow, and is fiercely loyal.
In the narrative of The Path to Power, Android 8 serves as a pivotal character who demonstrates that a being created for evil can choose goodness. His friendship with Goku is the central relationship of his arc. After Goku saves him from General White's self-destruct device, a bond forms between the two outcasts. Goku names him Eighter, a gesture of friendship that delights the android. Android 8, in turn, becomes a protector, eventually making the ultimate sacrifice. In a major plot deviation from the original series, Android 8 is later destroyed by Commander Black at the Red Ribbon Army Headquarters. He bravely holds off the commander's powerful mecha to protect Goku, an act of heroic self-sacrifice that pushes Goku into a rage-fueled power-up. This death is not permanent, as Goku uses the Dragon Balls at the film's conclusion to wish his friend back to life, also having the bomb removed from his chest.
Regarding his abilities, Android 8 possesses considerable superhuman strength, enough to battle against military hardware and push back large mecha that had previously knocked Goku unconscious. A notable departure from the original story is his ability to fly. In The Path to Power, he is depicted flying and dashing through the air with great speed, a skill he uses effectively in combat. He also has an implanted self-destruct bomb, though it is never used in the film. His development from a controlled, reluctant fighter to a willing and cheerful hero who makes a conscious choice to sacrifice himself for a friend is the key to his role in the story.
