Description
Dore is a fictional character from the anime film Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, serving as a member of Cooler's Armored Squadron, an elite unit under the command of the tyrant Cooler. His background reveals that he hails from planet Coola No. 256, a world originally known as planet Beppa. The unique environment of his home planet, where continents are surrounded by lava, contributed to the development of his extraordinarily tough and resilient body. Before becoming a soldier in Cooler's forces, Dore used his formidable physique to become a professional wrestler in the Galactic Pro Wrestling League, where he remained undefeated for three hundred matches, reportedly killing every opponent he faced.
In terms of appearance, Dore is a large, green-skinned humanoid alien with long, flowing black hair reminiscent of the Saiyan Raditz. He wears the standard upper body armor of Cooler's squadron, which includes a white helmet with a brown center section and a yellow scouter over one eye for measuring power levels. Unlike some of his comrades, he does not wear lower body armor, instead sporting only purple underwear along with gloves and boots.
Dore's personality is defined by his bloodthirsty and overwhelmingly overconfident nature. He derives pleasure from belittling and bullying those who are smaller and weaker than himself, displaying a cruel and sadistic streak. This is most clearly demonstrated when he threatens to crush the young Son Gohan's skull. Despite his brutish demeanor, he can be perceptive, as shown when he quickly realizes the importance of the bag of Senzu Beans that Gohan carries. However, his intelligence is questionable at best, as he appears to be forgetful and has to be reminded by his comrade Neiz that the planet Namek was destroyed by Frieza. When faced with an opponent vastly superior in strength or the imminent threat of death, Dore's confidence can quickly give way to fear. Above all else, he is extremely loyal and respectful to his master Cooler, showing deference and following orders without question.
In the story of Cooler's Revenge, Dore accompanies Cooler and the rest of the Armored Squadron to Earth on a mission to hunt down and kill the Saiyan Goku, who defeated Frieza and brought shame to their family. The squadron initially mistakes Gohan for Goku, and Dore captures the child by grabbing his tail. When Goku arrives, Dore engages him in combat, attempting to use a bear hug wrestling hold to restrain the Saiyan for an attack by Neiz. The plan backfires when Goku dodges, causing Neiz to inadvertently kick Dore instead, leading to a brief argument between the two soldiers. After Cooler severely wounds Goku, Dore congratulates his master on eliminating the Saiyan, only to be corrected when Cooler reveals Goku is still alive. Dore then participates in the subsequent search, blasting the surrounding area in an attempt to destroy the wounded Goku and his companions. His end comes when he corners Gohan and threatens to crush his skull. This provokes the intervention of Piccolo, who engages Dore in battle. Despite his toughness, Dore is ultimately killed by Piccolo, who destroys him with a homing energy blast.
Key relationships include his unwavering loyalty to Cooler, who commands the Armored Squadron and for whom Dore holds great respect and fear. He fights alongside his teammates Salza, the leader of the squadron, and Neiz, with whom he shares a somewhat bickering camaraderie. His primary adversaries are Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo, the latter of whom directly causes his death.
Dore undergoes very little development throughout the film, remaining a static character whose overconfidence and cruelty ultimately lead to his destruction. He serves as a typical henchman, demonstrating the power gap between Cooler's elite forces and the heroes, only to be defeated to raise the stakes and showcase the growing strength of characters like Piccolo.
Notable abilities possessed by Dore include flight using ki, the power to fire basic ki blasts, and significant physical strength, particularly in grappling techniques. His signature move is the Bear Hug, a crushing hold he used against Goku. He also possesses the Can-Opener Attack, an attempt to crush an opponent's head with a one-handed grip. In conjunction with Salza and Neiz, Dore can perform the Full Power Energy Barrage Wave, a combination attack that fires multiple rapid energy waves. According to a 1991 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump, Dore's official power level is stated as 185,000, which interestingly places him above Salza, the squadron's leader, in terms of raw power. However, despite this numerical advantage, he performs poorly against Piccolo and is unable to defend against a single homing blast.
