OVA
Description
Ken Masters is an American martial artist and the wealthy heir to the Masters family fortune. He was sent to Japan by his father at a young age to train under the esteemed martial arts master Gouken. This was a measure to instill discipline in the boy and prevent him from becoming spoiled. During his training in Japan, Ken met and befriended Gouken's other star pupil, Ryu. The two quickly became inseparable, forging a bond of best friendship and a fierce, friendly rivalry that would define both of their lives.
In the Street Fighter Alpha series, Ken is depicted as a young man at a pivotal crossroads. He did not participate in the first major Street Fighter tournament. Instead, he entered and won a prestigious United States martial arts tournament, a title previously held by Charlie Nash. It was during this time that he met a woman named Eliza, who became his girlfriend. Following this victory, Ken returned to his master's dojo in Japan to share his success. Upon arriving, he was horrified to witness the death of Gouken at the hands of the deadly martial artist Akuma. Blinded by rage and grief, Ken attacked Akuma but was swiftly and brutally defeated.
This traumatic event became the primary driver for Ken's actions in Alpha. He began wandering the world with two goals: to find his friend Ryu and inform him of their master's death, and to hunt down Akuma for revenge. When Ken finally located Ryu, he found his old friend in a state of deep turmoil. To help Ryu regain his focus and dispel his inner darkness, Ken challenged him to a sparring match. After emerging victorious, Ken noticed how stressed and unfocused Ryu had become. In a gesture of deep friendship and symbolic support, Ken took the red ribbon tying his own long blonde hair into a ponytail and gave it to Ryu, who then began wearing it as a red headband to help him stay concentrated on his path as a warrior.
Ken is portrayed as the perfect contrast to his stoic and serious best friend. While Ryu is calm, focused, and introspective, Ken is his opposite in almost every way. He possesses a flashy, unorthodox, and unpredictable fighting style that mirrors his brash and confident personality. He is often egotistical, short-tempered, and does not shy away from reminding his opponents of his greatness. However, beneath this veneer of arrogance lies a pure heart. Ken is fundamentally a good-natured and easygoing person who cares deeply for his friends and family. He believes in honor and giving every opponent a fair fight, never backing down from a challenge no matter how difficult it appears. His development in this era sees him not only grappling with the loss of his master but also searching for his own identity and purpose, separate from his rivalry with Ryu. Through encounters with young fighters like Karin Kanzuki and Sakura Kasugano, he rediscovers his focus and reaffirms that having a rival is not about supremacy but about motivating oneself to train harder.
His key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Ryu is the most significant, a complex mix of brotherly affection and competitive drive. His relationship with his master, Gouken, is one of deep respect and gratitude. The murder of Gouken sets his path for revenge against Akuma, marking one of the few times his natural confidence is replaced by darker emotions. His connection to Eliza grounds him, providing a link to a life outside of constant battle. In the story of Street Fighter Alpha 3, Ken is captured and brainwashed by the villain M. Bison, who then uses him as a pawn to lure Ryu into a trap. It is through Ryu's victory in their forced fight that Ken is freed from Bison's control, allowing him to join the final assault against the dictator.
Notable abilities are a key distinguishing factor between Ken and Ryu. While both studied the same Ansatsuken style under Gouken, their personalities have shaped their techniques differently. Ken has mastered the Shoryuken, or Dragon Punch, infusing it with powerful ki to make it his signature and most devastating move. His version is often more aggressive and fiery compared to Ryu's. He is also known for his rapid kicks, particularly the Hurricane Kick, and a more aggressive application of the Hadouken fireball. His fighting style is built around speed, aggression, and flashy, multi-hitting combos. In the Alpha games, his super moves include the Shoryureppa, a series of rapid dragon punches, and the Shinryuken, a single, incredibly powerful rising uppercut that can be enhanced for additional damage.
