Yann Pichon
Description
Yann Pichon is a French actor, sound engineer, and voice director, primarily known for his extensive work in the dubbing of anime and animated series. Born in 1964, his entry into the world of dubbing was unique, beginning in 1982 through his parents' small company that operated in the field. He initially learned the craft of sound editing and later worked in foley before being offered opportunities to voice children and teenagers. After a decade, he transitioned to voicing adult characters, establishing himself as a prominent figure in French anime dubbing.
Pichon's career is marked by a vast number of major roles in Japanese animation. He has voiced iconic characters such as Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop, King Bradley in Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Kazuma Kuwabara in Yu Yu Hakusho. He is also well-known as the voice of Dracule Mihawk in the long-running series One Piece and as Takumi Fujiwara in Initial D. His other notable roles include Togusa in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Keith Shadis in Attack on Titan, and multiple characters in Hunter x Hunter (2011). His filmography also includes roles such as the Atomic Samurai in One Punch Man, Kisho Arima in Tokyo Ghoul:re, and Fat Gum and Gentle Criminal in My Hero Academia. In the video game world, he is recognized as the voice of Bentley in the Sly Cooper series, Jinx in Jak and Daxter, and Cullen Rutherford in the Dragon Age franchise.
Throughout his career, Pichon has developed recurring associations with certain anime franchises. He has voiced numerous characters across the various series of the Saint Seiya: Hades arc, including Rhadamanthe, Mû, and Camus. In the Fairy Tail anime, he lent his voice to Kain Hikaru, Velveno, and several other characters. He has also been a consistent presence in the dubs of the Kuroko's Basketball and Blue Exorcist series. His versatility extends to voicing multiple roles within a single series, as seen in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Hunter x Hunter (2011).
Pichon considers his portrayal of Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop to be his favorite role, a series he has compared to the film Pulp Fiction. His performance as Spike has been highly praised, earning him multiple rankings in the top five for best animated series voices in the Anime Grand Prix, as voted by readers of Animeland magazine. In addition to his acting work, Pichon has also worked as a voice director since the early 2010s, directing the French dub for series such as Blue Exorcist.
