Description
Lyserg Diethel is a British shaman and a traditional dowser, born on May 17, 1986, in London, England. He is the son of Liam Diethel, a famous detective who used dowsing in his investigations, and Jane Diethel, who came from an aristocratic family. From a young age, Lyserg was trained by his father to become a dowser and a great investigator, inheriting the family guardian spirit Morphea, a pink fairy spirit passed down through generations. On his sixth birthday, while searching for his gift, the shaman Asakura Hao appeared at his home and killed his parents in a fire after they refused to join his cause. Lyserg arrived in time to witness their deaths and attempted to confront Hao, but was easily overpowered and dismissed as insignificant. This traumatic event shaped his entire life, driving him to seek vengeance and become strong enough to defeat Hao.

After the death of his parents, Lyserg lived with his maternal grandfather, who tried to train him in dowsing and shamanism, but Lyserg refused to learn from anyone other than his father, whom he idolized. Eventually, his grandfather died, and Lyserg was taken in by a wealthy man named Oknox, where he befriended a boy named Wat Hudson. Oknox was later discovered to be involved in human trafficking; he killed Wat and nearly killed Lyserg, but Hao intervened and killed Oknox. Following this, Lyserg traveled across England searching for Hao, the murderer of his parents.

Lyserg entered the Shaman Fight with the goal of gaining power and killing Hao. During the second round, he encountered Asakura Yoh and his companions, testing their strength by attacking them. After Yoh knocked some sense into him, Lyserg calmed down and joined their group, traveling with them for a time. However, he grew frustrated that they did not understand his desire for revenge. He later encountered the X-Laws, a militant group of shamans dedicated to eliminating Hao, whom they believed to be the source of all evil. Lyserg joined the X-Laws, becoming part of Team X-I alongside commander Marco and the leader Iron Maiden Jeanne. Despite his allegiance to the X-Laws, Lyserg remained friends with Yoh and the others, and he struggled with the X-Laws' ruthless methods, as he could not bring himself to kill innocent people—his only target was Hao.

Lyserg is highly intelligent, often considered the smartest of the five elemental warriors chosen by Lady Sati. He is generally kind-hearted and calm, but his emotions run strong whenever Hao or his parents are mentioned. He is passionate in his hatred for Hao and can become volatile at the mere sight or mention of him. Over the course of the story, he develops from a vengeful youth into a more rational and balanced individual, especially after reconciling with Jeanne and Yoh, which brings him inner peace and allows him to be his true self within the X-Laws. He is deeply loyal to his friends and will risk himself to help them, as shown when he cried when Yoh withdrew from the Shaman Fight to save Tao Ren, and when he joined the others to rescue Chocolove.

As a dowser, Lyserg uses a crystal pendulum as his medium for dowsing and for channeling his Oversouls. His first guardian spirit is Morphea (called Chloe in some English adaptations), a poppy flower spirit that has been in his family for generations. After joining the X-Laws, he receives the mechanical archangel Zeruel, which runs on the Angel Engine and is modeled after a Lotus Elise. In the manga, Lyserg never abandons Morphea; instead, he fuses both spirits to create his armor Oversoul, Mastema Dolkeim, which represents the Flame of Hostility and was created to prevent his grudge from consuming him. During his training in hell, he becomes the second strongest of the five warriors, with a furyoku value of 170,000. In the final battle against the Patch officiants, he receives the Spirit of Fire from Hao and uses it to fight the Shaman King. After the Shaman Fight, it is assumed that Lyserg returns to England and becomes a detective like his father, fulfilling his lifelong dream, and he joins his allies in promising to make the world a better place.
