Description
Amaimon is a character from the anime and manga Blue Exorcist. He is a powerful demon who holds the title of the King of Earth, one of the Eight Demon Kings that rule over the demonic realm known as Gehenna. As a son of Satan, he is a direct descendant of the demon god and is considered a sibling to the protagonist, Rin Okumura, and his twin brother Yukio, as well as to the flamboyant demon Mephisto Pheles. Within the hierarchy of the eight kings, Amaimon is recognized as the seventh most powerful, a position that still makes him an extraordinarily formidable entity.
In terms of appearance, Amaimon typically inhabits a human-like vessel that appears as a teenage boy. This body, which he has used for over a thousand years, has distinctive features including dark green hair with a prominent, lighter-colored spike on top. He often carries a lollipop and has long, claw-like black fingernails. When he taps into his true demonic power, his appearance transforms dramatically, growing horns, pointed ears, a long tail, and massive, muscular arms reminiscent of a dinosaur, with his chest displaying floral markings. A common nickname among fans for him is broccoli or cauliflower, referencing the unique shape of his hair.
Amaimon's personality is a study in contrasts. On the surface, he often appears calm, collected, and almost expressionless, but this facade hides a brash, aggressive, and highly volatile nature. He is extremely prideful regarding his power and status and becomes violently enraged when ignored, mocked, or when his name is mispronounced. He possesses a childlike and playful attitude, often treating fights and combat as a game for his own amusement, a trait he shares with his brother Mephisto. This childishness is also reflected in his complete lack of patience for losing, and he hates having his fun interrupted by outside interference. Despite his ferocity in battle, he shows a degree of care for his goblin-like familiar, Behemoth, who is almost always by his side.
The character is primarily motivated by his own interests and entertainment. He holds a distinct fascination with Rin Okumura, specifically with the potential of Rin's demonic powers, and frequently seeks to provoke him into a fight to test his strength. Initially, he seems largely neutral in the overarching conflicts between the human world and the demonic forces, acting more as a force of nature that is difficult to control. However, his motivations become more complex as the story progresses. He owes a debt to his brother Mephisto, likely related to the clone body he inhabits, which compels him to assist with certain schemes. His longstanding history with the ancient figure Shemihaza, the Emperor of Creation who sealed away his true body ages ago, also becomes a significant factor in his later actions.
In the story, Amaimon serves as a major antagonist and a recurring obstacle for Rin and his friends. He is first introduced at the behest of Mephisto to test Rin's abilities, stealing his sword, Kurikara, and engaging him in a one-sided battle to draw out his power. He later attacks the group during a training camp, taking Shiemi Moriyama hostage and forcing Rin to draw his sword, which ultimately reveals Rin's demonic nature to his classmates. After a brutal fight where Rin's uncontrolled flames overwhelm him, Amaimon is sealed away inside a large cuckoo clock by Mephisto to recover and cool his anger. He is later released to fight Rin again in the demon world and, in a more peaceful turn, is enrolled in True Cross Academy under the alias Ambrosius Faust, posing as Mephisto's nephew to observe the students.
Amaimon's key relationships define much of his role. His relationship with Mephisto is one of subservience and debt, as he often follows his older brother's orders despite his own volatile nature. His rivalry with Rin Okumura is central to his character arc, as he repeatedly challenges Rin to satisfy his own curiosity and desire for a good fight. Perhaps his most significant relationship develops with Shiemi Moriyama. What begins as a manipulative tactic, when he callously announces her as his bride to anger Rin, eventually evolves into a deep and binding connection. It is later revealed that due to her powerful connection to nature and her lineage related to Shemihaza, Shiemi is able to defeat Amaimon and bind him as her servant, forcing him to fight on the side of the True Cross Order against the forces of Satan.
Amaimon undergoes notable development from a seemingly chaotic and neutral force to a more constrained but still powerful entity. Initially a wild and uncontrollable demon who acts purely on impulse, he is repeatedly punished and sealed for his outbursts. His acceptance of a clone body to exist in the human world and his eventual binding to Shiemi force him into a defined role, stripping him of his neutrality and compelling him to choose a side in the great conflict, even if reluctantly. Despite this, he retains his core personality, often seen trying to provoke Rin or expressing frustration at his circumstances.
His notable abilities are directly tied to his title as King of Earth. He has absolute control over the ground, allowing him to cause massive earthquakes, manipulate the terrain, and attack with devastating physical force. His raw physical strength is immense, able to send opponents flying with a simple flick or shatter bones with a poke. When he releases his full power by manifesting his demon heart, his strength increases to the point where he can defeat Rin with a single blow, but this form puts immense strain on his vessel, causing his body to break apart if he uses it for too long. He also has the ability to regenerate quickly from injuries and can move between the human world and the demon realm using a magical key provided by Mephisto.
