Description
Heldalf, also known as the Lord of Calamity, serves as the primary antagonist in Tales of Zestiria the X. His origins lie in a past where he was once a highly respected general in the Rolance army named Georg Heldalf. In the anime adaptation, his fall from grace is tied to a profound act of betrayal. General Heldalf had earned the trust of Michael, the previous Shepherd, who brought him to the sacred location of Artorius' Throne to meet the supreme seraph Maotelus and entrusted him with the protection of the village of Camlann. However, Heldalf deceived Michael, using the village as bait to ambush Hyland soldiers, turning it into a war zone and condemning Camlann to its destruction despite Michael's pleas for help in rescuing survivors. This catastrophic event led to the corruption of Maotelus and the deaths of many, including Michael himself. In his final moments, a vengeful Michael cursed Heldalf to eternal loneliness, a sentence that stripped him of everything dear and, most cruelly, rendered him immortal and unable to die.

Driven to despair by the curse that saw his family perish and his life crumble, Heldalf eventually succumbed to the very malevolence he had helped create, transforming into the world's most powerful Hellion. His personality is a study in tragic contradiction. On the surface, he is a creature of immense malevolence who seeks to engulf the world in chaos and suffering, using his power to instigate war between Hyland and Rolance. He is cunning and underhanded, willing to use any means to achieve his goals, including attempting to mentally break the new Shepherd, Sorey, and turn him into a Hellion. Yet, buried deep beneath this monstrous exterior, fragments of his original humanity remain. The anime highlights this when it is revealed that Heldalf retreated to the desolate Northern Lands, not to consolidate his power for a final assault, but to die alone, far away from others, suggesting an unconscious desire to limit the harm caused by his cursed existence.

Heldalf's role in the story is as the direct foil to Sorey. While Sorey represents the ideal of purification and coexistence, Heldalf embodies the inevitable despair and corruption that can arise from betrayal and suffering. His primary motivation shifts from a simple desire for destruction to a complex, tragic attempt to find release from his endless torment. His key relationships are defined by his past and his opposition. His betrayal of Shepherd Michael is the foundational sin that created the curse, making Michael both victim and, through his act of vengeance, a co-creator of the Lord of Calamity. Under his command are malevolent servants like the seraph Symonne, who aids in his schemes. His central dynamic is with Sorey, whom he sees as a reflection of what he might have been and a potential successor to his curse.

Throughout the series, Heldalf undergoes a significant narrative development, particularly in the anime's conclusion. Unlike in the game where he is ultimately killed by Sorey, the anime opts for a path of redemption. During their final confrontation, Sorey perceives that Heldalf is still battling the malevolence within himself and that a shred of his original will remains. Resolving to save him, Sorey opens a passage into the earth's core and seals himself alongside Heldalf. There, over the course of several decades, Sorey gradually purifies the Lord of Calamity, finally breaking the ancient curse. This act restores Heldalf to his original human form, freeing him from his suffering and allowing him to begin a new life.

In terms of power, Heldalf is a formidable opponent. His corrupted physical form is bestial, resembling an anthropomorphic lion, often clad in a dark, ominous coat. His abilities as a Hellion include the generation and manipulation of immense malevolence, which can distort minds and transform others into Hellions. He wields powerful elemental magic, including fire, lightning, and darkness, and is capable of summoning other hellions to his aid. He is a martial master, utilizing a powerful secret technique known as Lion's Howl, a remnant from his days as a general. His ultimate power is displayed when he performs an Armatization, a fusion, with the corrupted seraph Maotelus, transforming into a colossal, dragon-like entity of near-planetary levels of destructive potential.
