Takayuki Sugō

Description
Takayuki Sugō is a Japanese actor and voice actor born on August 1, 1952, in the Iioka coastal area of Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Before entering the entertainment industry, he was an active child who excelled in sumo and sports during his school years. His path to performance began with an interest in music, taking guitar lessons with the ambition of becoming a singer-songwriter, but he eventually found his true calling in acting.

Sugō's professional foundation was built in the world of theater. In 1974, he joined the Bungakuza Research Institute as part of its 15th training class, a prestigious theater company in Japan. After rigorous training, he made his stage debut in 1978, appearing as Laertes in Yukio Ninagawa's production of Hamlet staged by Toho. He became a full, seated member of the Bungakuza theater company in 1979, where he would remain for nearly four decades, performing in numerous classical and contemporary stage works. This extensive background in theater honed his commanding presence and distinctive deep, resonant voice, which would later become his trademark in voice acting. In 2017, he departed from Bungakuza and continued his career under the management of Fukuda & Co.

While remaining active on stage and in television dramas, Sugō began expanding into voice acting in the 1990s. His deep and authoritative voice made him a natural fit for roles requiring gravitas, wisdom, or menace, often portraying mentors, leaders, and antagonists. In anime, he has lent his voice to a vast array of iconic characters. He is well-known for his roles in long-running shonen series, including Zangetsu and later Yhwach in Bleach, and as the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, in the Naruto franchise. He voiced the powerful Jirochō Doromizu in the Gintama series, as specified in the user's query. Other significant anime roles include Captain Jūzō Okita in Space Battleship Yamato 2199, Wanyūdō in Hell Girl, Yoshimura in Tokyo Ghoul, Shinpachi Nagakura in Golden Kamuy, Shiryu of the Rain in One Piece, Raizen in Yu Yu Hakusho, and Doppo Orochi in the Baki series. His filmography also includes roles in acclaimed series such as Samurai Champloo, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (as the Narrator and an older Simon), and Vinland Saga (as King Sweyn).

Beyond anime, Sugō has been highly active in the field of film dubbing, providing the official Japanese voices for numerous prominent Western actors. He is a frequent voice for the work of actors such as Al Pacino, Tommy Lee Jones, Jean Reno, and Hugo Weaving. Notably, he has been the primary dubbing voice for Morgan Freeman since the early 2000s. His extensive dubbing credits also include playing Elrond in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Agent K in the Men in Black series, V in V for Vendetta, and Walter Bishop in the television series Fringe.

His work extends into video games, where he has voiced characters in major titles such as Final Fantasy XII as Reddas, the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance as Boris, and the Resident Evil 6 as Derek C. Simmons, among many others. He also voiced the Hundred-Faced High Priest Chaos in the tokusatsu series Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger.

With a career spanning over five decades, Takayuki Sugō remains a highly active and respected figure in the Japanese entertainment industry, continuing to take on roles in anime, dubbing, and video games into the 2020s.
