Description
Raizen is an ancient Upper S-class demon and one of the three rulers of the Demon World, a group known as the Three Kings, alongside Mukuro and Yomi. He is widely regarded as the strongest of the three and one of the most powerful combatants in the entire story, a being whose martial prowess earned him a fearsome reputation. He belongs to an elite branch of demons known as the Mazoku, and he is the ancestral father of Yusuke Urameshi, a fact that places him at the center of the final major arc of the anime.

In his early life, Raizen was a violent predator who raided human settlements and devoured human flesh, which is the traditional means by which demons sustain and grow their power. During one battle he was gravely wounded and was nursed back to health by a human woman who descended from a line of healers. He fell in love with her, and she bore his child, making him a direct ancestor of the Urameshi family line. Out of love for her, he vowed never to consume human flesh again. Because demons draw much of their strength from eating humans, this self-imposed oath gradually sapped his power over the centuries. His beloved eventually died of old age before he could see her again, yet he kept his promise and continued to starve himself for hundreds of years. Although his body withered and his strength declined, he remained one of the most dangerous beings in existence, and even in his final moments he could still fight on equal terms with other S-class warriors.

Raizen's personality is a blend of regal pride, blunt honesty, and deep inner conflict. In his prime he was a ferocious and merciless demon who delighted in violence and battle, but his love for a human woman transformed him. He became someone capable of enduring immense suffering rather than break a promise, which shows both his stubbornness and his capacity for devotion. By the time he appears in the story, he is calm, reflective, and weary, carrying the weight of centuries of self-denial. He speaks with the wisdom of an ancient being but retains a feral edge that makes clear he has not been tamed. He is unafraid to speak harsh truths, and he deliberately tests Yusuke both physically and emotionally. Beneath his stern exterior, he genuinely cares for his descendants and wants his bloodline to continue with strength and pride.

His primary motivations are rooted in that love and in the legacy it created. He wishes to see his family line endure, and he wants his power and territory to pass to someone worthy. Rather than allow his kingdom to fall into chaos after his death, he sets his sights on Yusuke as his heir and challenges him to grow strong enough to claim what is rightfully his.

Raizen's role in the story begins during Yusuke's battle with the antagonist Sensui. At a critical moment, Raizen takes control of Yusuke's body and uses his immense power to help Yusuke defeat his enemy. Afterward, Raizen's loyal followers retrieve Yusuke and bring him to the Demon World, where Raizen reveals the truth of their blood relation. He explains that his power has been passed down through the generations and that Yusuke carries his blood, and he asks Yusuke to inherit his will and become a new ruler. He gives Yusuke a period of time to train and surpass him in combat, with the understanding that Yusuke will then take over his kingdom. Raizen dies before that goal is achieved, but his death is peaceful because he has at last met his descendant and secured the continuation of his line. After his death, his power fully awakens within Yusuke, granting him access to immense demonic energy that he must learn to control. Raizen's former followers recognize Yusuke as his heir, and this inheritance sets the stage for Yusuke to reorganize the Demon World through a grand tournament that reshapes its politics and fulfills Raizen's legacy.

In terms of key relationships, the most important is his connection to the human woman who healed him and bore his child. That bond is the turning point of his existence and the reason for his self-imposed starvation. His relationship with Yusuke is central to the final arc, as he serves as both a mentor and a challenge, pushing Yusuke to embrace his demonic heritage. He also shares a rivalry with Mukuro and Yomi, the other two Demon Kings, who respect him as a peer even as his power fades. His followers and former comrades remain deeply loyal to him, and they carry out his wishes after his death.

Raizen's notable abilities stem from his status as an Upper S-class demon. He possesses an overwhelming level of demonic energy that is enough to intimidate even powerful demons of Class S. He has superhuman physical strength, speed, durability, and reflexes far beyond those of ordinary demons and humans, and he is a devastating hand-to-hand fighter who relies on raw force and savage instincts rather than complex techniques. Even while starving and near death, he retains enough power to fight evenly with other S-class beings, which demonstrates his extraordinary baseline. Through his bloodline, his immense power is ultimately inherited by Yusuke, making Raizen's strength a lasting influence on the story even after his passing.
