Description
Bertrand serves as the loyal attendant and caretaker of Tigrevurmud Vorn, the young earl of the Alsace region. He is an elderly but robust man, appearing in his golden years with a half-bald head and a distinctive beard around his chin. His advanced age does not diminish his strength or his dedication to his duties.

His background is deeply intertwined with the House of Vorn, having served the family for two generations. Before working for Tigre, Bertrand was a faithful aide to Tigre's father, Urs Vorn. For decades, he served by Urs's side, and when Urs passed away, Bertrand made a solemn vow to his late master that he would protect and watch over his son by any means necessary. This promise became the cornerstone of his existence and the driving force behind all his actions.

Personality wise, Bertrand is defined by an unwavering and tenacious loyalty that is parallel to none. He is willing to give his life for the safety and legacy of the Vorn family. His devotion to both Urs and Tigre is absolute, making him one of the most reliable and prominent allies in Tigre's circle. Beyond his serious dedication, he is also a sociable and friendly individual, known for his sweet and kind words. During leisure times, he enjoys spending time with his peers and playing games, showing a lighter side to his otherwise dutiful nature.

Bertrand's role in the story begins at the Battle of Dinant Plains, where he accompanies Tigre in the Brunish army. He is one of the few survivors of the disastrous battle. His most critical early action occurs when he learns that Zion Thenardier is marching on Alsace. Following a plan devised by Mashas Rodant, Bertrand undertakes a perilous journey to the territory of Leitmeritz in the rival kingdom of Zhcted. He successfully finds Tigre, who is being held by the Vanadis Eleonora Viltaria, and delivers the urgent news, which directly leads to Tigre forming a crucial alliance with Elen to save his homeland. From this point on, he remains a steadfast supporter of Tigre throughout the ensuing civil war. He serves as a general in the Silver Meteor Army, often fighting alongside his lord in numerous campaigns, including the Battle of Molsheim where he notably carried a heavy burden of quivers to keep Tigre supplied with arrows.

His key relationships are centered on the Vorn family. His bond with Tigre is one of deep-seated loyalty and paternal care, acting as a protector and advisor. He is a trusted figure to the household maid Titta, and he shares a history of friendship with the older noble, Mashas Rodant. While his primary loyalty is to Tigre, he also earns the respect of the Vanadis and other allies through his unwavering commitment.

The most significant moment of development for Bertrand, and his ultimate legacy, is his death. During a crucial mission to the holy grotto of Saint-Groel to prove the lineage of Princess Regin, Tigre and his companions are ambushed by the forces of Duke Thenardier. In the ensuing skirmish, a tremor shakes the cavern, and as rocks begin to fall, Bertrand rushes back to protect Tigre from a soldier named Steid, taking a mortal blow in his place. As he lies dying, he expresses his pride in seeing how much Tigre has grown and his profound gratitude for having been able to serve two benevolent masters, Urs and Tigre. His passing has a profound and immediate impact on Tigre, igniting a fierce rage that unleashes the tremendous power of Tigre's black bow. Furthermore, the loss helps Tigre realize the larger scale of his struggle, pushing him to grow beyond merely protecting his home of Alsace. Bertrand's sacrifice is a pivotal emotional turning point in the narrative.

In terms of notable abilities, although he is elderly, Bertrand is a capable and experienced warrior. He has practical combat experience from serving under Urs and fighting in numerous battles alongside Tigre. He is also known to be a skilled spearman and, in a notable detail, was the one who taught spearmanship to Tigre's father, Urs. His greatest ability, however, is not tied to martial prowess but to his incredible tenacity, resourcefulness, and strategic value, proven when he successfully infiltrated enemy territory to bring a vital message to his lord.
