Description
Jūzō Okita, born December 8, 2141, in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, rose to prominence as a United Nations Cosmo Navy officer whose strategic brilliance shaped humanity’s survival during the Great Garmillas War. A veteran of the Second Inner Planetary War, he balanced military service with academic rigor, earning a PhD in astrophysics at the National Space Defense Academy while forging enduring bonds with peers such as Ryu Hijikata and Hikozaemon Tokugawa. His command of the Japanese Fleet and later the UNCN First Fleet culminated in the Second Battle of Mars in 2198, where his tactics secured Earth’s first decisive victory against Garmillas forces—a triumph shadowed by the death of his son, who served under his command.

Known for defiance in the face of annihilation, Okita prioritized diplomacy during Earth’s first hostile encounter with the Garmillas in 2191, refusing orders to fire on alien vessels. This act of conscience cost him his command temporarily but cemented his reputation as a leader guided by principle. His later orchestration of Operation M, a high-stakes diversion to secure the Wave-motion Core from Princess Sasha Iscandar, exacted heavy losses, including the life of Mamoru Kodai—a sacrifice that haunted Okita and deepened his complex mentorship of Mamoru’s brother, Susumu.

Secretly battling Planet Bomb Syndrome, a terminal illness caused by Garmillas radiation, Okita concealed his physical decline while overseeing Program Yamato. As captain of the titular battleship, he spearheaded its desperate voyage to Iscandar for the Cosmo Reverse System, steadfastly remaining at the helm even as his body failed, notably during Yamato’s harrowing escape under missile bombardment.

His leadership blended unyielding discipline with paternal empathy, particularly toward younger officers like Susumu Kodai, whose potential he nurtured despite unresolved guilt over Mamoru’s death. Bedridden in his final days, Okita continued advising the crew until his passing moments before Yamato’s Earth return.

In an alternate continuity, cryogenic revival enables Okita to reemerge years later, commanding forces in renewed conflicts—a narrative branch distinct from the 2199 timeline. Within the latter, his legacy persists through the crew he inspired, embodying resilience and sacrifice against existential threats.
