Description
Jirochou Doromizu is a prominent figure in the Kabuki district, recognized as one of its legendary Four Devas and the former leader of the powerful yakuza syndicate, the Dobunezumi Group. He is a man in his mid-sixties, standing at 179 centimeters tall, and his appearance is highly distinctive. His most notable features are his unusually dark skin and his face, which is marked with multiple deep scars from countless battles, leading to the mocking nickname "Ganguro old man" from others. He dresses in traditional attire, a style that befits his status as a respected crime boss.

Born and raised in the Kabuki district, Jirochou was a troublemaker from a young age. His childhood friend, Otose, was the one person who would always stand by him and try to set him straight, even when he later became involved in organized crime. Under her influence, he grew into a popular vigilante and a leader among men. Over the years, he became a legendary figure; in his youth, he was a hero in the Joui War, fighting alongside the loyalists. His reputation as a master swordsman grew, eventually leading to a single, defining defeat at the hands of a policeman named Terada Tatsugorou. Instead of becoming enemies, the two became best friends, bound by a shared desire to protect their beloved Kabuki district. This created a complex love triangle, as both men loved Otose. Jirochou, believing Tatsugorou could make her happier, stepped aside to let them marry. Jirochou later married himself and had a daughter, Chin Pirako.

The pivotal event that shaped the rest of Jirochou's life was the war, during which Tatsugorou died protecting him. With his dying breath, his best friend made him promise to protect both Otose and the town. This promise became an unshakeable, lifelong burden. Consumed by guilt and a rigid sense of duty, Jirochou felt he could only fulfill his oath by becoming a ruthless, almost inhuman protector. He distanced himself from his own wife and young daughter, abandoning them to stay true to his promise. For twenty years, he dedicated himself solely to protecting Kabuki district, no matter how low he had to sink. He acted as a cold and brutal force, believing this was the only way to safeguard the town and Otose from internal and external threats.

Jirochou possesses a strength that is nearly unrivaled. Even in his old age, he is one of the most formidable fighters in the series. He is a master of iaidō, the art of quick-draw swordsmanship. His slashes are so incredibly fast that they are virtually invisible to the naked eye, and he has been known to cut off an opponent's arm without them even realizing it. His raw power is immense; he can shatter metal and break a precious wooden sword in a single stroke. Despite his age, he has lost none of his fighting spirit, and alongside Gintoki Sakata, he was able to single-handedly defeat a score of elite Shinra warriors.

Jirochou's role in the story becomes most prominent during the Kabuki District Four Devas arc, where he serves as the main antagonist. On the surface, he appears to be a ruthless villain orchestrating a plan to achieve ultimate power over the district, even going so far as to seemingly betray his past by critically injuring Otose. However, this cold and ruthless demeanor is a mask for his true, honorable nature. His actions are all part of a calculated effort to draw out and destroy a corrupt Amanto, Kujaku Hime Kada, who was secretly manipulating the district’s factions to take control. He deliberately acted as a villain to protect the town from a greater evil, adhering to an unwavering personal code of honor defined by keeping promises. He despises being manipulated and will act decisively against any who try to control him, even if he is aware of their plans.

Jirochou's key relationships are the core of his character. His bond with Otose is profound and complex; he loves her but has spent his life sacrificing his own happiness for hers. His promise to her late husband, Tatsugorou, is the singular motivation that dictates every decision he makes. This devotion to the past leads to the deep estrangement from his own daughter, Chin Pirako. She grew up feeling abandoned and resentful, eventually instigating a conflict in a desperate attempt to get his attention and love. He also shares a notable connection with Gintoki Sakata. The two men are kindred spirits in many ways, both being stubborn, honorable, and driven to protect those close to them, and their climactic battle is a fight of mutual respect and understanding.

Through his conflict with the Yorozuya, Jirochou finally finds a measure of peace. After his fight with Gintoki, the physical tokens of his promise to Tatsugorou are destroyed, symbolically freeing him from his self-imposed chains. He is able to reconcile with his daughter, Pirako, and steps down from his position as one of the Four Devas to dedicate himself to her. He is last seen leaving Kabuki district to travel with his daughter, having finally chosen to fulfill his own role as a father.
