Description
Jose, known as Jakob in the English version, is a primary antagonist in the second season of the anime. He is one of the Three Pure Nobles, also referred to as the Three Emperors of Yliaster, serving alongside his comrades Lester and Primo. Jose is the leader of this trio and acts as the group's superior, being the wisest and most methodical member. His origin is tied to a bleak future where humanity has been nearly wiped out by the energy source known as Ener-D. He is an embodiment of despair, specifically the despair of old age, having been created from the future survivor Aporia along with Lester and Primo, who represent childhood and youth respectively.
In terms of appearance, Jose is an imposing figure, standing over seven feet tall with a massive, muscular build that distinguishes him from his smaller associates. He has wrinkled skin, a long, father-time style gray beard, and an overgrown right eyebrow that covers his eye. He is bald and his visible left eye is yellow. He wears a white cloak and hood with a dark golden orange color scheme, a red gem placed above his right eye, and a distinctive gray face mask marked with an infinity symbol that muffles his voice. Beneath his cloak is a chest plate bearing a similar infinity symbol. His abdomen can unfold to reveal a built-in Duel Disk, and his Duel Runner is stored in a compartment from which it can emerge.
Jose's personality is defined by his calculated patience and wisdom. He moves slowly and plans every action meticulously, possessing great tolerance for obstacles and for the impatience of his teammate Primo, who often attempts to pursue his own aggressive strategies. Despite his calm exterior, Jose holds a deep disdain for humanity, viewing people as arrogant, shortsighted, and in constant need of Yliaster's guidance to remain on what he believes is the correct path. This coldness extends to individuals he has harmed; for instance, he justifies the murder of Sherry LeBlanc's parents as a necessary correction of history and coldly states he has no memory of the act itself. He is capable of reflecting on himself by observing his younger associates, recalling his own impetuous youth while watching Lester or noting how he has outgrown Primo's brash arrogance.
The primary motivation for Jose is the completion of the Grand Design, a plan orchestrated by Yliaster to correct a catastrophic mistake in history: the creation of Ener-D. His goal is to erase this energy source, which he believes will lead to humanity’s destruction. To achieve this, he orchestrates events to complete an Infinity Circuit. Unlike Primo, who wants to use brute force and an army of Duelbots, Jose believes the best way to complete the circuit is to use the World Racing Grand Prix tournament to draw out and harness the power of the Signers and their powerful Synchro Monsters.
In the story, Jose functions as the master strategist operating largely behind the scenes. He is first seen alongside his comrades when they introduce themselves as the new directors of Sector Security. He argues for a patient approach during the WRGP, using the tournament as a lure. When Primo goes rogue with his Duelbot army, Jose counters by orchestrating an elaborate scheme involving an imposter Jack Atlas to test the power of the Crimson Dragon and activate more of the Grand Design. After Primo is defeated by Yusei Fudo, Jose personally confronts the Signers, revealing his identity as the leader of the Three Emperors and his true plan to reset history by destroying New Domino City. He demonstrates his immense personal power by easily defeating Sherry LeBlanc and her bodyguard in combat and finally obtaining his own Machine Emperor tablet.
Jose's key relationships are with his fellow emperors, Lester and Primo. While they share a common goal, the dynamic is often tense. Jose acts as a superior and a foil to the headstrong Primo, frequently having to restrain or correct him. He views Lester with a degree of patience, seeing his own younger self in the boy. All three are ultimately revealed to be fragments of a single person, Aporia. This is the culmination of Jose's development; after being pushed to his limit in a duel against Team 5D's, he merges his body with the damaged forms of Primo and Lester to reconstitute their original form, Aporia, in a final attempt to achieve their goal.
Jose possesses several notable abilities that go beyond standard dueling. He has immense physical strength, able to defeat trained fighters with a single arm and destroy vehicles with his bare hands. He also demonstrates telekinesis, capable of moving heavy objects and stopping falling stone tablets with his mind. Like Primo, he can fuse his own body with his specialized Duel Runner, merging to become a more powerful form reminiscent of his Machine Emperor monster, Granel. In a duel, he is a left-handed player who utilizes a Meklord Emperor deck, focusing on his ace monster, Meklord Emperor Granel. His dueling style is ruthless; he can absorb the attack power of defeated monsters and has been shown inflicting real physical damage on his opponents during a Turbo Duel.
