Description
The colossal red dragon known as Grigori initiates cycles of conflict by ravaging human settlements and claiming the hearts of chosen individuals called the Arisen. Its arrival heralds apocalyptic events, inciting widespread panic across kingdoms and causing monstrous activity to surge throughout the land. Possessing immense intelligence and understanding human speech, the Dragon exhibits behaviors hinting at a deeper purpose beyond destruction, though its origins and motivations remain enigmatic to humanity.

Grigori was once a human Arisen who ascended to confront the Seneschal—the being tasked with sustaining the world—but failed in this final trial. This defeat transformed the Arisen into the eternal Dragon, now compelled to test subsequent generations. As part of its role, the Dragon consumes the hearts of Arisen, binding them to its existence and granting them virtual immortality. Should the Dragon perish, all connected Arisen lose their agelessness, rapidly aging to their true years.

During its assault on Cassardis, the Dragon specifically targets the villager Ethan. Engaging him in battle, it declares "*Initium novum*" ("A new beginning"), rips out his heart, and proclaims "*Habeas ut penitus cognoscas*" ("May you have this so you may deeply understand"). This act marks Ethan as the new Arisen, granting him comprehension of the Dragon's speech and binding his fate to the beast before it retreats, leaving Ethan alive yet fundamentally altered.

Throughout Ethan's quest for vengeance, the Dragon reappears intermittently, observing or indirectly influencing events. It tests Ethan's resolve by offering Faustian bargains: exchange a loved one's life for worldly power and rulership over Gransys, mirroring the choice accepted by Duke Edmun Dragonsbane decades earlier. Alternatively, the Arisen may reclaim their heart through direct combat. The Dragon expresses disappointment when Arisen choose sacrifice over confrontation, viewing it as a failure of character.

The ultimate confrontation occurs at the Tainted Mountain. During the battle, the Dragon reveals its nature as a former Arisen and emphasizes its role as a necessary trial to determine worthy successors to the Seneschal. Upon defeat, the Dragon disintegrates, freeing all hearts it possessed and severing the immortality of those linked to it. Its destruction also triggers the opening of the Everfall, a dimensional rift connecting multiple worlds.

In broader lore, Dragons appear cyclically throughout history, seemingly fulfilling a duty tied to the world's balance. Their intelligence and targeted violence suggest a cosmic function, though human records remain speculative about their true origins or objectives. Grigori specifically references serving a "greater truth" and laments humanity's fragility during its final moments.
