Description
Ferid Bathory is a vampire noble who holds the rank of Seventh Progenitor in the hierarchical society of vampires. He is a tall, slender male standing approximately 182 centimeters tall, with striking silver hair that reaches his hips and distinctive red eyes that mark his vampire nature. His appearance is characterized by an elegant and regal style, typically wearing a white uniform and cloak complemented by a red butterfly bow tie, red crystal earrings, and a ribbon in his hair that is said to be changed daily. His overall look is designed to convey a bewitching and refined beauty.

Born as a human royal candidate, Ferid lived approximately 1300 years before the main events of the story. His human life was marked by a disturbed nature from an early age. Despite a strict upbringing where he was being prepared to become a saint, he harbored violent tendencies, ultimately committing patricide by killing his own parents. Seeking immortality or perhaps an escape from his own psyche, he was turned into a vampire by the Second Progenitor, Rígr Stafford, also known as Saitō. Ferid has long harbored a grudge against his sire and has been plotting revenge against him for over a thousand years.

Ferid’s personality is a complex blend of charm, cruelty, and unpredictability. On the surface, he presents himself as chatty, enthusiastic, and playful, often speaking in a polite and seemingly friendly manner. He has a habit of inciting others with provocative statements, only to claim he was joking. This cheerful facade, however, masks an intensely sadistic nature. He derives genuine pleasure from manipulating others, crushing their hopes, and watching their despair. This was chillingly demonstrated when he befriended the children of the Hyakuya orphanage, even trading curry for blood, only to orchestrate their massacre when they attempted to escape. He is infamous for his eccentric behavior and is considered a wildcard by both allies and enemies. His actions are consistently self-serving, and he is quick to betray anyone if it serves his long-term schemes. He has no qualms about working with humans, such as Guren Ichinose, leaking vampire intelligence to them, while simultaneously treating any being, human or vampire, as a disposable pawn.

Ferid’s primary motivation appears to be the overthrow of the current vampire ruling system, particularly the destruction of his sire, Saitō. He is deeply fascinated by the potential strength of humans and, conversely, finds the complacency and foolishness of many vampires contemptible. He covets the ruling position of the higher-ranking progenitors and is willing to incite civil war among vampires to achieve his goals. He also harbors a mysterious connection to the "Mikaela" factor, having once been called by that name himself, and he takes a personal interest in individuals who carry this trait.

In the story, Ferid serves as a primary instigator of the central conflict. He is directly responsible for the deaths of Yūichirō Hyakuya's and Mikaela Hyakuya's family from the Hyakuya Orphanage, an act that fuels Yūichirō's intense desire for revenge. He intentionally allowed Yūichirō to escape during the massacre, feigning death after being shot in the head, as part of a larger manipulation. He uses his knowledge of Krul Tepes's involvement in the Seraph of the End Experiment as leverage to protect himself and later betrays her to the Progenitor Council, leading to her imprisonment and his temporary assumption of command. He plays both sides of the human-vampire war, establishing a secret intelligence partnership with Guren Ichinose and leaking vampire research materials and information to him. His schemes drive much of the plot, leading other characters from Sanguinem to Shinjuku, Nagoya, and Osaka.

Key relationships define much of his interaction with other characters. He shares a twisted "brotherly" relationship with Crowley Eusford. After killing everyone Crowley cared about when he was human, Ferid turned him into a vampire using Saitō's blood, making them both offspring of the same sire. Despite this horrific origin, they work closely together over the centuries, with Ferid often relying on Crowley’s strength in battle while simultaneously betraying his location to human forces for his own amusement. With Krul Tepes, the Third Progenitor and Queen of Japan, Ferid maintains a relationship of mutual disdain and blackmail. He claims to love her, but she despises him, suspecting he only loves her power. He eventually overthrows her by exposing her secrets. His relationship with Guren Ichinose is one of convenience and mutual manipulation, as they exchange information and assistance to further their respective, often conflicting, plans.

Ferid undergoes notable development throughout the series, though his core nature remains scheming. He faces severe consequences for his actions, notably being subjected to sunlight torture alongside Krul for his treachery, an event that destroys his hair and noble garments. He is later rescued by Guren and the others, after which his appearance becomes more casual, with shorter hair that eventually grows back. Despite these setbacks, he never wavers from his millennium-long plan to kill his father, Saitō, and continues to pursue this goal with undiminished determination, even allying with former enemies when necessary.

As a Seventh Progenitor, Ferid possesses abilities far surpassing those of lower-ranking vampires and humans. He is described as "ridiculously strong" by Guren Ichinose. He typically relies on his immense physical strength and speed in combat, often preferring to use his bare hands. He is also capable of wielding a sword when the situation demands it. However, his most notable abilities are not purely physical. His true power lies in his manipulation, strategic planning, and intelligence gathering. He is a master of political intrigue within vampire society, using blackmail, secrets, and deception to maneuver against individuals far more powerful than himself, including Second and Third Progenitors. His combat style is pragmatic; he is not afraid to retreat from overwhelming force, demonstrating a survival instinct that has allowed him to live for over a millennium. His actions are calculated, and his apparent carelessness is often a deliberate part of a larger, intricate scheme designed to create "interesting" situations that he can exploit.
