TV-Series
Description
Pernida Parnkgjas is a Quincy and a member of the Sternritter, the Wandenreich's elite order of warriors, holding the designation C: The Compulsory. It also serves as one of the four members of the Schutzstaffel, the personal guard of the Quincy emperor Yhwach. In appearance, Pernida is small and childlike, roughly two heads tall, wrapped in an oversized white robe with a deep hood. Only a pair of small eyes is visible within the shadowed hood, so its face and expressions remain hidden for much of the story. Its voice matches this mysterious presentation, emerging in slow, fragmented sentences in which it speaks of itself in the third person. This concealment is meaningful, because Pernida's true form is the severed left arm of the Soul King, and when revealed, the palm of its hand shows a single large eye with two pupils, similar to Yhwach's own eyes.
Its background is tied directly to the founding of the world order in the setting. As the left arm of the Soul King, Pernida embodies the concept of progress, and its nature is defined by advancement and adaptation. At some point the severed arm became an independent, sentient being with its own name and will, and it took its place as a commander within the Wandenreich before being chosen for the Schutzstaffel. The animated adaptation adds context to its origins, showing that its connection to the Soul King made it part of the mechanism that maintains the world, and it eventually sided with Yhwach, who sought to dismantle that mechanism.
In personality, Pernida is extremely reserved and silent, rarely speaking during its early appearances. When it does speak, its words are halting and cryptic. Beneath this quiet exterior, however, it possesses strong pride in its identity as a Quincy, and it becomes visibly angered when others insult Quincy. It also rejects being reduced to a mere body part of the Soul King, insisting that its name is Pernida Parnkgjas and that it acts as a Quincy in its own right. During battle, it shows a curious and adaptive mind, learning from its opponents and even imitating their movements, speech patterns, and mannerisms, which suggests a personality that develops and grows as it absorbs information.
Its role in the story's third part centers on a prolonged confrontation with the Soul Reapers Kenpachi Zaraki and Mayuri Kurotsuchi. As the two advance through the Wandenreich's fortress toward the royal palace area, Pernida blocks their path and engages them. It first battles Kenpachi, enduring his slashes and inflicting severe damage in return, and then turns its attention to Mayuri, forcing the captain to use his modified Bankai. Earlier in the larger conflict, Pernida accompanied Yhwach to the Soul King Palace, emerged from his shadow to fight among the Schutzstaffel, was defeated by Oetsu Nimaiya, and was revived by Yhwach's selection. In the third part, it evolves rapidly through its fight with Mayuri and becomes one of the most dangerous obstacles the Soul Reapers face.
In terms of relationships, Pernida is loyal to Yhwach and counts the other Schutzstaffel members, such as Lille Barro and Gerard Valkyrie, as its comrades. Its chief antagonists are Kenpachi Zaraki, whose raw power it must learn to counter, and Mayuri Kurotsuchi, whose scientific cunning proves to be its undoing. Its most meaningful dynamic is with Nemu Kurotsuchi, Mayuri's lieutenant, who ultimately brings about its end. The anime also touches on its link to Ichibei Hyosube, connecting its origins to the Soul King's role in sustaining reality.
Pernida's abilities revolve around its nature as the left arm of the Soul King. Its Schrift, the Compulsory, allows it to extend its nerves outside its body, and any solid object its nerves touch, whether living or inorganic, can have its shape and motion forcibly altered. This effect can also be transmitted, such as when it embeds nerves in a Quincy arrow so that striking a target changes that target's movement or form. It can fire these nerves as arrows or spread them like tentacles over a wide area, giving it enormous reach and making direct physical combat extremely dangerous. Complementing this is its innate ability to advance, which functions as accelerated evolution. By making contact with something through its nerves, Pernida obtains information about it and evolves its body in response, regenerating wounds, adapting to poisons, copying techniques, and even developing a way to consume and neutralize Mayuri's Bankai after being trapped inside it. It also possesses the Quincy blood technique Blut Vene, which allowed it to withstand Kenpachi's strikes, the high-speed movement skill Hirenkyaku, and the ability to move through shadows, which it used to infiltrate the Soul King Palace. It is capable of flight and can use its Vollständig form, which grants it golden hand-shaped wings. When its body is damaged, severed pieces can grow into entirely new left hands, allowing it to divide and multiply. Its death comes when it consumes Nemu Kurotsuchi, who carries an implanted device that accelerates cell division; absorbing her triggers uncontrolled overgrowth in Pernida's body, causing it to burst apart and destroy itself.
