Description
Dr. Gel is a high-ranking scientist and operative within the Gogol Empire, serving as a persistent antagonist in the second season of Space Dandy. His primary mission, assigned by his superior Admiral Perry, is the capture of the alien hunter Dandy, a task he pursues with a combination of genuine determination and consistent failure.

In appearance, Dr. Gel is an imposing and unusual figure, resembling a large, anthropomorphic gorilla. He is typically depicted with a full beard, a distinctive periwig, and a cape that covers one of his arms. One of his most recognizable features is an eyepatch shaped like the letter G. He also carries a golden staff, which signifies his high rank within the Gogol Empire.

His personality is a study in contrasts. On one hand, Dr. Gel is portrayed as a serious, direct, and focused individual who is deeply committed to his mission for the Gogol Empire. He is described as a brilliant scientist, capable of becoming so immersed in his research that he loses awareness of his surroundings. On the other hand, his constant failures to capture Dandy often place him in the role of comic relief. His schemes are frequently thwarted in spectacular fashion, and a recurring theme is that he and his assistant meet with explosive or fatal misfortunes, only to reappear in subsequent episodes as if nothing had happened. Despite his towering and brutish appearance, he can demonstrate a measure of caution and self-preservation, such as when he chooses to retreat rather than face a dangerous adversary. He also shows occasional flashes of gentlemanly behavior, as seen when he apologetically kidnaps a character for information.

Dr. Gel's motivation is rooted in his duty to the Gogol Empire and its war against a rival faction known as the Jaicro Empire. The Gogol Empire seeks to capture Dandy because he possesses a unique and powerful energy source called pyonium. This energy is tied to Dandy's nature as a universal constant, an individual who can traverse parallel universes and whose existence is fundamental to reality itself, making him the key to a superweapon that could decide the outcome of the galactic war. Dr. Gel is relentless in pursuing this objective, believing that harnessing Dandy is the empire's path to victory. A more personal and sentimental side is also revealed; he has been seen with an old photograph of his mother, for whom he expresses a longing, indicating some emotional depth beneath his gruff exterior.

Within the story of the second season, Dr. Gel serves as the main adversarial force driving the overarching plot. He is a constant presence, appearing in episodes to hunt Dandy and the Aloha Oe crew across the galaxy. His role is not merely as a villain but as a foil whose serious, imperial ambitions clash directly with Dandy's carefree and chaotic lifestyle.

His most significant relationship is with his partner, Dr. Bea, who serves as his right-hand man and scientific assistant. They work closely together, often consulting on plans and piloting their ship, which is famously shaped like the Statue of Liberty with a ball gag in its mouth. This partnership is tested, however, when Bea is eventually revealed to be a spy for the Jaicro Empire, leading to a direct betrayal. Dr. Gel also has a complex relationship with his superior, Admiral Perry, who commands the Gogol forces. While Gel is loyal, Perry has shown a ruthless willingness to sacrifice him, including ordering his own forces to fire on Gel if it means securing Dandy.

Over the course of the season, Dr. Gel experiences a subtle but significant development from a single-minded antagonist to a character who becomes more deeply enmeshed in the escalating conflict he helped set in motion. His repeated failures and narrow escapes are a running gag, but they also build towards the climax where he finally succeeds in capturing Dandy. This victory is short-lived, as Bea's betrayal for control of Dandy's pyonium forces Gel into a new role, fighting to reclaim his prize and ultimately leading to the destruction of the Gogol superweapon and the collapse of reality as it is known.

In terms of abilities, Dr. Gel is first and foremost a brilliant scientist and leader. He commands the resources of the Gogol Empire, including its fleets, advanced technology, and a distinctive personal spacecraft. While his scientific acumen is formidable, his practical attempts to capture Dandy are often undermined by the chaotic nature of the universe and Dandy's own unpredictable luck, leading to a long string of inventive but unsuccessful plans.
