TV-Series
Description
Jūzō Shima is the second son of the Shima family, a distinguished line of Buddhist exorcists that leads the Myōō Dharani sect in Kyoto. Following the death of his elder brother, Takezō, during the Blue Night incident sixteen years before the main story, Jūzō became the heir to the family and assumed the role of young chief priest of the Shima Temple. He holds the position of captain of the First Exorcist Unit at the Kyoto Branch Office and has achieved the rank of Upper Second Class Exorcist, possessing both the Knight and Aria Meister titles. Standing at 178cm tall and born on February 5th, he is twenty-five years old.
Jūzō is known for a personality that balances a generally calm and good-humored nature with a short-tempered and passionate side, particularly when it comes to protecting his family or confronting injustice. While he often tries to advise his younger brother Kinzō against reckless behavior, he can easily become drawn into the same conflicts, showing that his own temper is not far from the surface. Compared to his brothers, he is more level-headed and responsible than the hot-headed Kinzō, yet less laid-back than his youngest brother, Renzō. He takes his duties seriously, showing concern for his father, Yaozō, and his childhood friend, Mamushi Hōjō. Despite a fierce exterior, he has a caring and lighthearted side, getting along well with his younger siblings; flashbacks show him carrying the baby Renzō on his back, and he continues to look after him, even offering to help him train. He loves children and is noted for his remarkable popularity with women, even having a fan club at the academy. His favorite quote is the constant effort brings success.
Jūzō's motivations are deeply rooted in his family duty and his role within the Myōō Dharani sect. As the heir, he is committed to protecting the sect and its members. During the events of the Kyoto Saga, he is driven by a need to uncover a traitor who attempted to steal the right eye of the Impure King, a relic his family safeguards. His personal history is intertwined with that of the Hōjō family, leading to a long-standing rivalry with the three Hōjō sisters, especially Mamushi, whom he has known since childhood as they attended exorcist cram school together. However, beneath this antagonism lies a deep-seated care for her well-being. After the defeat of the Impure King, he demonstrates his capacity to move beyond old grievances, proposing marriage to her following her fall from grace. His actions are consistently protective, whether for his siblings, his father Yaozō, or his friends, such as regularly hoisting Konekomaru Miwa up in greeting.
In the story of the Kyoto Saga, Jūzō plays a central role as a leader and combatant during the crisis of the Impure King's resurrection. Initially, he is among those investigating the theft of the Impure King's right eye. He secretly investigates the traitor and identifies the infiltrator as a member of the Hōjō family, but his attempt to apprehend her is thwarted by the intervention of Saburōta Tōdō. Following his father's orders, he is assigned to watch over Tatsuma Suguro, a duty that leads him to witness the Impure King's revival at the Goma Hall. During the decisive battle on Mount Kongō, he cooperates with Yukio Okumura to confront Saburōta Tōdō, showcasing his combat prowess. His actions are crucial in the final confrontation against the Impure King.
Jūzō's key relationships define much of his character arc. His relationship with his father, Yaozō Shima, the head of the Kyoto branch, is one of respect and duty, as he aids him and shows concern for his health. With his brothers Kinzō and Renzō, Jūzō is protective and friendly, though sibling bickering does occur, and he affectionately calls Kinzō a [fuckin' idiot]. The most significant relationship is with Mamushi Hōjō, which evolves from a childhood friendship marred by familial rivalry into a deep and lasting bond. After the fall of the Impure King, he comforts her and formally asks for her hand in marriage, leading to their engagement and eventual wedding.
Jūzō undergoes notable development, primarily transitioning from a figure bound by sectarian rivalry to one who chooses personal reconciliation. His character arc moves from being locked in a generational feud with the Hōjō family to proposing a union with Mamushi, symbolizing a new era of cooperation. Furthermore, his sense of responsibility solidifies as he fully steps into the role of heir and leader during the crisis, moving beyond simply being his father's son to become a decisive figure in the sect's defense. After the events of the Kyoto Saga, further development includes his marriage to Mamushi and the announcement that they are expecting a child, indicating his continued growth beyond the immediate conflict.
As an exorcist, Jūzō is a formidable combatant who effectively combines his Aria and Knight Meisters to produce potent flame-based attacks. His primary weapon appears to be a K'rik, which he uses as a focus for his abilities. His known techniques include the Killing Fire Wheels (Kasharinzan), where he swings his weapon to release several spinning disks of fire; the Flame-Tipped Vajra Spear (Katō Kongōsō), which creates a large spearhead of flame at the top of his K'rik; and the Flame Emitting Meditation (Kasei Zanmai or Kashō Zanmai), where he concentrates flames into a large ball and hurls it at an opponent. These abilities establish him as a high-ranking exorcist capable of fighting powerful adversaries like Saburōta Tōdō. Information regarding his development or abilities beyond the events of the Kyoto Saga is limited.
