Kazuichi Banjou transitioned from leading the 11th Ward ghouls to becoming the established leader of the 6th Ward. His initial prominence stemmed from a deep, unreciprocated devotion to Rize Kamishiro. This loyalty drove him to defy Aogiri Tree to protect her, leading to his forced recruitment when they seized his ward. Physically imposing at 187 cm with a stout build and short, flushed hair, Banjou originally sported a distinctive reverse "の"-shaped beard, later changing it to a cross-shaped design. His fundamentally pacifistic nature and compassion starkly contrasted with the violent 11th Ward ghouls. He admired those displaying strength outside societal rules, exemplified by his enduring reverence for Rize. Despite his aversion to violence, he developed a strong sense of duty and loyalty, especially towards those who showed him kindness. Banjou advocated for Rize in 11th Ward meetings, hoping she would lead. She dismissed his attentions as annoying and threatened him, yet before leaving the ward, she called him "leader," instilling a sense of responsibility. Motivated by this, he attempted to unify the ward's ghouls. After Aogiri Tree forcibly recruited him and ordered him to find Rize, he traveled to the 20th Ward's Anteiku café. There, he encountered Ken Kaneki, whose scent resembled Rize's, leading to a brief conflict. This resulted in Banjou, his followers Ichimi, Jiro, and Sante, and Kaneki being captured by Aogiri members Ayato Kirishima and Yamori. During captivity, Banjou formed an escape pact with Kaneki. The failed attempt led to Kaneki's torture and Banjou's imprisonment until Kaneki freed him during the 11th Ward battle. Afterwards, Banjou and his followers joined Kaneki’s group, swearing unwavering loyalty. He participated in critical operations, including the raid on Dr. Kanou's laboratory where he sustained severe injuries from Eto Yoshimura, and the Owl Suppression Operation where he followed Kaneki’s decision to disband their group and relocate to Anteiku. A significant evolution occurred during the timeskip preceding Tokyo Ghoul:re. Banjou emerged as the capable and intelligent leader of the 6th Ward, successfully uniting its ghoul factions. He developed intellectually, engaging with complex literature like Eto Yoshimura’s novels, and demonstrated refined leadership charisma. His combat abilities also advanced unexpectedly. Classified as an Ukaku-type ghoul—typically characterized by speed and ranged attacks—Banjou historically displayed neither, being slow and reliant on durability. Post-timeskip, he manifested a unique application of his kagune for healing rather than offense, a rarity among Ukaku users. This ability proved vital during the Third Cochlea Raid when he healed Ayato Kirishima’s critical injuries at Touka Kirishima’s urging. His relationships form core aspects of his character. The trio Ichimi, Jiro, and Sante constantly accompany him, sharing a bond of mutual loyalty and lighthearted teasing since their 11th Ward days. His devotion shifted from Rize to Ken Kaneki, whom he pledged to protect as a "shield," forgiving even severe injuries inflicted by Kaneki during unstable moments. He maintained a brotherly dynamic with Hinami Fueguchi, affectionately calling her "Hina-chan," and risked his position to aid her rescue from Cochlea despite tensions with his former Aogiri captor, Ayato Kirishima. Later, he collaborated pragmatically with Shuu Tsukiyama within the United Front, managing ghoul activities despite underlying distrust. Following the Cochlea raid, Banjou continued utilizing his healing kagune, attempting to treat Akira Mado while navigating the mistrust of her protector, Seidou Takizawa. He later assumed logistical responsibilities within the United Front alongside Tsukiyama, leveraging his experience in coordinating large groups.
