Description
Gauche Suede is a central figure in the story of Tegami Bachi. He is introduced as a young and talented Letter Bee, a government-employed courier who braves the dangerous, unfamiliar land of Amberground to deliver the hearts of people in the form of letters. Approximately twelve years before the main events of the story, Gauche lost part of his Heart on the Day of Flicker, when the artificial sun that illuminates the capital briefly failed. On that same day, his younger sister Sylvette was born, and their mother died. Having lost his memories of his mother, Gauche subconsciously poured all of his devotion into making his sister happy. At the beginning of the narrative, Gauche is the Letter Bee who finds a young boy named Lag Seeing, who has been addressed as a living letter to be delivered to his aunt. Gauche escorts Lag across the dangerous Yodaka district, and during this journey, he forms a profound bond with the child, inspiring Lag to one day become a Letter Bee himself.
In terms of personality, Gauche is depicted as a caring, dedicated, and enthusiastic individual with a strong sense of duty. His primary motivation as a young Bee is to rise to the rank of Head Bee, a position that would provide him with enough financial security to care for his sister and give them a peaceful life. He is driven, hardworking, and serious about his responsibilities, often taking on difficult missions to achieve his goal. However, beneath this professional exterior lies a deep-seated void from his missing childhood memories. Gauche's role in the story undergoes a dramatic and tragic shift. After he departs for the capital of Akatsuki to pursue his dream, he goes missing and is presumed dead. He later resurfaces not as a Letter Bee, but as a Marauder named Noir, an agent of the anti-government organization Reverse who steals letters from other Bees. As Noir, he is cold, detached, and has no recollection of his past life or of Lag, which is the result of his Heart being almost completely consumed after surviving exposure to the artificial sun's light. He insists that Gauche no longer exists and is known for his ruthless efficiency in his new role.
The key relationships in Gauche's life are the primary drivers for both his original heroism and his later recovery. His love for his younger sister Sylvette is the most consistent and genuine emotion he possesses, remaining a deep and true feeling even after his transformation into Noir. His bond with Lag Seeing is the narrative's emotional core. Lag refuses to believe Gauche is truly gone and dedicates himself to retrieving Gauche's heart. After numerous confrontations, Lag successfully shoots a letter bullet into Gauche, which begins the slow, incomplete process of restoring his lost memories. Another significant relationship is with his Dingo, a partner creature named Roda. As Noir, he is accompanied by a silent girl with the same name. It is later revealed that this girl is the fusion of his original canine Dingo and a human, and Gauche subconsciously named her after his lost partner, indicating a lingering emotional attachment he does not consciously understand. He also shares a past with Aria Link, a fellow Letter Bee, with whom he had a close, possibly romantic, friendship.
Gauche's character development is defined by loss, transformation, and a partial return to self. He evolves from a hopeful young hero into a tragic antagonist who has lost his identity. His development arc is not a simple restoration. Even after Lag's intervention, Gauche does not fully regain his memories. Instead, he awakens with the memories of Noir but finds that the deep-seated feelings of affection for Lag and Sylvette are authentic and come from the deepest part of his remaining Heart. He ultimately forges a new path that is neither the ambitious Letter Bee nor the loyal Marauder. He chooses to help the "spirits who could not become human" and aids Lag in fighting a greater threat, before eventually bidding farewell to his old life and leading these lost souls to a new home.
Gauche possesses notable abilities that align with his role as a Letter Bee. He uses a Shindanjuu, a gun-shaped weapon that fires Shindan, or "Heart Bullets," which are powered by a person's Spirit Amber. His Spirit Amber is uniquely black. As a young Bee, he carries a revolver-style Shindanjuu known as Nocturne #20. After becoming the Marauder Noir, he wields a larger, more powerful rotating revolver called Gymnopédie. His signature attack with this weapon is known as Raven Black or Kurobari (Black Needle). He is considered an exceptionally powerful and skilled Bee, having been the first person known to survive the "light" of the artificial sun, an event that cost him his memories but not his life.
