Description
Largo Lloyd, whose name appears in some materials as Ralgo or Rargo Lloyd, is a senior figure in the world of Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee. He begins the story as the director of the Bee Hive, the postal institution in the city of Yuusari, where he oversees the Letter Bees who deliver letters and packages across the land. In that capacity he serves as the immediate superior of the young protagonist Lag Seeing and takes a particular, initially unexplained interest in Lag and his deliveries.
Born in the district of Kagerou, Lloyd was the child of Zick Balor, a powerful figure who held authority over Amberground's capital of Akatsuki, and his true birth name was Largo Balor. His family history was shaped by his father's experiments aimed at creating artificial spirits. Lloyd's mother became the first test subject and was fused with plant life, while Lloyd himself became the second subject, receiving a transplant of his mother's organs before being abandoned by his father. As a result, he is counted among those who did not become spirits. It is later revealed that his father had resorted to these extreme measures because his mother was dying of an incurable disease, a discovery that adds a more sympathetic dimension to his origins. After secretly taking ancient documents from the library of Akatsuki, Lloyd learned the true nature of the artificial sun that illuminated the capital, and he kept that knowledge hidden while working within government service.
Around the age of twelve, Lloyd moved to Yuusari and became a Letter Bee. Even as a boy he was known for his outstanding performance and was regarded as the fastest, most reliable, and best among the Letter Bees of his time, with a competitive streak that made him a consistent winner. He rose through the ranks to become Head Bee and eventually director of the Bee Hive. During those years he presented himself as a loyal public servant with a carefree and easygoing manner that often left his subordinates uncertain of his true intentions, but this relaxed facade concealed a calculating mind, immense patience, and a deep hatred of the government that ruled Amberground. His genuine goal was revolution: he intended to dismantle the system built by his father and to expose the lies on which the artificial world was founded. A thorough realist, he was willing to make cold and ruthless decisions when his purpose demanded it. In his youth he was noted to have resembled both Jiggy Pepper and Gauche Suede, two Letter Bees who would later figure prominently in the story.
In the early part of the story, Lloyd acts as a guide and mentor figure. He recognizes Lag Seeing's unusual abilities, admits him into the Bee Hive, and quietly watches over his growth, while also entrusting important missions to accomplished Letter Bees such as Jiggy Pepper, whose pride he understands. His closest colleague at the Bee Hive is Aria Link, his vice-director, who serves as his trusted right hand, although he eventually leaves her side without revealing the truth about himself. Lloyd's relationship with his father Zick Balor is one of deep resentment born of the experiments performed on him, and much of his conduct is directed toward destroying the distorted world his father created.
Later in the narrative, after he is removed from his position by the government official Caribs Garrard, Lloyd sheds his cover and joins Reverse, the anti-government organization that opposes Amberground. He assumes leadership of the group after it has suffered a devastating blow and rebuilds it into a larger and more formidable force, becoming a central figure in the struggle against the established order. His turn also places him in opposition to Lag, transforming him from a benevolent superior into a figure who functions as an obstacle meant to challenge and push the protagonist. Even when describing the experiments performed on his own body, he remains calm and composed, a sign of how fully he has committed himself to his cause.
In combat and field work, Lloyd is a highly capable Letter Bee with experience on dangerous delivery routes and extensive knowledge of the armored insect creatures known as Gaichuu. His personal weapon is a cane-shaped Shindanjuu, a heart bullet gun whose gentlemanly exterior conceals a powerful firearm that fires shots charged with heart energy. As a leader of Reverse he also demonstrates considerable strategic ability, having spent years waiting patiently for the right moment to act on his convictions.
